Can someone explain this to me? I was under the impression that your smtp setting would be dependant on the service you are using like for eg. Gmail. Why would it matter what type of internet service provider you are using? I had to set up some gmail accounts and the ISP told me to use smtp.saix.net and not smtp.gmail.com. Why can you not use gmail?

Thanks

Relaying

Its simply because to use smtp.gmail.com would be considered relaying. Mail servers will not relay mail from just anyone. Otherwise, spammers could flood the mail server, making it do their dirty work. So if you try to use smtp.gmail.com you should get a "relaying denied" message because smtp.saix.net 'relayed' the mail for delivery.

A mail server will produce a "Relaying Denied" error when an unauthorised user attempts to send non-local email through the server. Non-local email is email which is addressed to a different server. In your case you can only send mail through smtp.saix.net as you are authorised to do so.

The user on the other end recieving your message will still see [email protected] send the message, so it doesn't really matter if you use telkom's smtp or gmail's smtp server.

If you used GMAIL's SMTP server and use the authentication method they force you to use, then there is no problem, cos GMail know's who is sending the mail, and will promptly kill your account if you abuse it.
