Hi,

I had an issue with this the other day but now I am wondering about a better solution.

We use an IS ISP at work and at home I use MWeb. I was having problems sending work emails from home and then realised it was because of the SMTP server. At work we use smtp.isdsl.net at home it is smtp.mweb.co.za. The solution was to change the server.

The problem is that I need to keep changing the SMTP server depending on whether I am at work or home. So the query is whether there is a way to automate this or another work around?

Thanks

I am guessing you are using a laptop and take this with you home to work?

I don't know of any automated way of doing this but if you are using MS outlook this will work -
Create a new mailbox account with your home ISPs details. Make the one you use the most the default account. When you start a new/reply/forward mail there will be a drop down box to select the account you will use to send the mail from.

Pretty sure this will work for other mail apps too - i just don't know what the settings are called.

Thanks for the response. Yip, I am aware of this solution but when sending business emails from home I still prefer to use my work email address. I do not like to muddle work and pleasure when it comes to email. Unfortunately this means changing the SMTP to do so.

I remember last time you mention you use a hosted domain for mail. Why not use that domain's SMTP server, ie. smtp.domain.tld ? That should work on any ISP account, as long as you use authentication.

This may be a stupid question but would it be automatic to have a domain SMTP server if it is a domain address? I know the website is not active as yet but it is domain email addresses that are being used.

You must try to authenticate yourself on the smtp.isdsl.net SMTP server.

By default, the SMTP server will reject all unauthenticated attempts to send email from a different network, but, some ISP's (and I am pretty damn sure that IS is one of them) will allow you to use their SMTP server from another network if you authenticate yourself with their SMTP server before sending the mail.

i.e. Get your techies to e-mail IS and ask them what login and password may be used to authenticate with the IS SMTP server, then enter these details into your email client.

Then you will not have to swap anything, and will be able to use the IS SMTP server from anywhere in the world.

smtpauth.mweb.co.za

or

ipass-smtp.mweb.co.za

Both need username & password. In return for using un& pwd all the problem related to connection type go away. IS/SAIX/WA doesn't matter.

MWeb rep told me those 2 are the same thing.

Also, the mweb SMTP is reliable, so I'd use that rather that the IS one. Because its authenticated, they don't really filter for spam sending side so little chance of emails not arriving.

So what username and password would one use? Remember I am wanting to access a work domain related email address while using Mweb at home.

Your mweb userame & pwd.

Remember, email doesn't inherently check source addr....its not built into the structure of the protocol. It should allow you to send emails with non-mweb source addr...but double check. I recall sending some test email (to myself) through the open mweb smtp and it didn't mind that the source addr was spoofed. Its possible that the pwd'd smtp has extra checks on it to compare source addr & login details, but I doubt it.

You could try setup 2 mail accounts using the same email but different smtp then you just select the correct when you are at work and home.

Setting up two SMTPs on the same account works like a charm (as mentioned above). I do this in Mail but there are other options.
