I don't get these guys. I always find them in the most arbitrary places. Like under some stairs railing or high up some wall or just on some brick behind a gate. What are they doing? They just stick there, for hours or even days on end.

Where are they going? I understand that they don't have a home to get to so do they just wander about? What's their reasoning behind it? Do they just decide "okay, I'm just going to take a break and hang out here for the next few minutes or days"

I'm not sure of snail's social structure either. They don't appear to be pack creatures. I've yet to notice a group of snails together. They're usually isolated.
So i understand they don't have wives and kids to get home to. Are they lonely perhaps? I don't know.

I don't know man, last time I dissected a snail, the brain looked really tiny.

This might explain their odd behaviour.
 
Rubbery. Good with garlic butter, better in a creamy white wine sauce.

Whats with the random questions :D . Snails are closely tied to water based creature on evolutionary terms, that being said they need to stay moist. Pouring salt on snails kills them because it drys them out, so the locations you find snails are cool/moist/damp areas.

Ah this explains it.

Snails are usually active in the summer, but if it gets too warm or too dry for them, they enter a period of inactivity known as estivation. They find a safe place—such as a tree trunk, the underside of a leaf, or a stone wall—and suction themselves onto the surface as they retreat into their shell. Thus protected, they wait until the weather becomes more suitable. Occasionally, snails will go into estivation on the ground. There, they go into their shell and a mucous membrane dries over the opening of their shell, leaving just enough space for air to get inside allowing the snail to breath.

Rubbish! look under a flowerpot on a hot day. It's like a regular orgy going on under there.
 
They have a higher purpose, they seem lonely and confused but really are the saviours off of world and ultimately our existence on this planet. Without them the sun would not rise, the waves will not crash, the moon will not shine on a clear night.
Such purposeful creatures lives are matyred on the growth and expansion of the human race, without them we would turn into dust and vanish to the deserts dunes to be trampled upon by rabied scorpions and hairy spiders.
The humble snail should not be questioned not stepped on or turned into skin creams, such acts of betrayal will lead us to vile remorseful zombies.

Let the snails be, for without them we would be no more, no more, no more, no more.

If you think about it, if you lie down on your stomach and roll your scrotum over your penis, it kinda looks like a snail. Then you just slither along on your stomach while ejaculating. It will be like a snail attached to a snake.
