SNO is here

SNO Telecommunications
Sounds like thats what they're calling themselves
According to cipro, there is a company registered called "SNO TELECOMMUNICATIONS" (2004/004619/07) ... them I guess? Kinda makes sense in a way, as the term "SNO" has gained some brand value in itself over the past four years while Ivy delayed and the public waited.

Of course, with no LLU and the new company already agreeing not to start a price war, I'd say there is still no true competition.

Jstrike, this is the telecoms sector we're talking about.

In all 1st world countries, there were once monopolies. They over-charged and had appalling customer service [BT for example]. However once competition was introduced and LLU enforced, prices have plummeted but speeds have risen [24Mbps for 30 pounds/month a case in point.]. Monopolies and even duopolies might work in other sectors, but certainly not in the telecoms sector.

PS: Even the US got ripped off when AT & T had their monopoly but it was broken up in 1996 and that's why the US have high broadband + cable penetration.

The government owns 30% in the SNO through Transnet's Transtel and Eskom's Esitel plus a 38% shareholding in Telkom which paid the state R1.9bn in dividends for the year ended March 2005.

So now the government has two cash cows ...

Which is fantastic because for every customer Telkom lose the SNO gains one. The government cannot lose so they will now be more open to hammering Telkom.

It all depends on how you look at it :)

Dominic Rooney : That is irellevant. Monoplies are not always bad and free-market competition is not always good. Examples of LLU doing good in other countries doesn't change that.

What irritates me is that the SNO has just been licenced and people are already dumping all over them for being a duopoly. Give them a break and lets see what they can do. If they abuse their position, then I will join in, but untill then, it is unfair.

BTW, I do think that LLU is a good thing, but as debbie2 said so well, there is a time and place for everything

GavinMannion : I like the way you look at it :-)

It is wrong (government is more concerned about job creation and GDP growth than a couple of billion rand in dividends), but still a great perspectve :-)

Or there won't be any reason to move.

It all depends on how it's implemented. :)

I am sorry guys. I think we are going to need the lube for at least another 2 years. I suspect 5 years would be closer to the mark of when they will realise they need 3rd and 4th etc network operators...

I am leaving Telkom out of pure spite. **** them... I have had enough of them. I will go out and buy a new tube of lube for the SNO, and see how excited they get over enteraining my _ _ _! See who leaves less pain behind.

I think Uninet deserves some credit for forward thinking by squatting in a domain that could well have only become interesting next year.

Anyway, I have it on good authority that something good is going to happen in February 2006. I wonder what it is?

LLU means more copper can be stolen, and road gangs digging up holes, costing money. Parts of Samrand have been down for a day recently, due to cable theft.

Non LLU for some time may be a good thing, as it will force the SNO to go Wireless/WIMAX (or whatever new tech comes out over time) to residential and Fibre to High bandwidth Corporates straight away. The downside is that there will be no "big bang"

Think about it. Transtel/Eskom must already have fibre to every Railway station, Electrical SubStation and TransNet/Eskom Office in every little dorp in the Country. With this and Wireless/Wimax, why do you need copper.

All they need to do, is build a self install box with an Aerial on it, Power Inlet and two ports out, One for traditional telephone and one UTP for data.

For me the big question is, Where is their international bandwidth going to come from

Is this not a blessing in disguise.

Good point Toby.... like on Botswana, Gabarone is mostly wireless. It would explain the Transtel antennas and massive transmitter mast on the Dawnview hill ;-)

I really hope they think of changing the branding, and/or renaming the company.

SNOTelecommunications

Can you imagine calling 0860-SNOT to apply for some telecoms services?

I can think of about 10 other great brands off the top of my head that would work better than SNOT (elecommunications) :D

FsckHom,
Telgold,
TataCom
etc...

Just not SnotCom!
