SNO - Let the head hunting begin

Hopefully over the next year Telkom will start to lose many of it's good staff.

May their operational expenses go through the roof.

There will be a scramble for experienced staff at all levels.

Can't wait for the SNO call centre to phone asking if I would like to switch supplier.

lol there is no scramble for good staff because they get the people with the worst skills and lowest IQ to work for them (when was the last time you got good service exept for them taking your money).

Personally I've always had good service from Telkom so I must be in the lucky few judging from the mails I receive and the Hellkom VENT's..

But yes - may Telkom lose the good staff - these are the ones who are working their behinds off to please the company's customers, but get paid next to nothing. And there are many.. the differences in salaries at Telkom is amazing, it ranges from around R40,000 a year up to R11.1 million.

And I can promise you the people lower down work harder than the people higher up - so salary is inversely proportional to the amount of work you put in.

My experience with Telkomonopoly has mostly been indifference & contempt for the customer (despite the fact that I'm always patient and do not lose my temper).

When I was in the US last year, my gf's dad decided to switch from SBC to MCI because they were offering a better deal. SBC called him every 5 hours for about a week offering better and better deals before he finally switched back. Then MCI started calling him every 5 hours for about 3 days doing the same thing before he switched. Then SBC started all over again.

This is the sort of thing that happens in a truly competitive telecoms situation. Companies fighting over customers and providing better and more affordable service.

I remember visiting a mate in the US about 8 years ago and the same thing happened. In the 2 weeks i was there about 10 calls came through from competing telcos. Here's hoping.
As for the SNO pinching staff from Telscum, you'd be surprised how many people would stay with an established company as opposed to entering the "Great Unknown". Having said that, now that they know about telscum's job-shedding policy they might jump at the chance.

No need to wonder - this is a basic tenet of current policy, as evidenced by the Prez's speech on Friday. There's an excellent analysis and comment in the Mail & Guardian about this - see 'Mbeki looks East' bylined 'Government is moving from a Washington Consensus to a Beijing Concensus' by Nic Dawes on page 4. The frequent spats between the ANC and COSATU also don't belie the basic principle and policy of unemployment reduction, even though we all feel not enough is being done, particularly in the face of retrenchments by the likes of Telkrap...
