SNR and Attenuation too High?

I was having trouble with my adsl line that didn't want to sync. I contacted telkom (who responed within 24 hours amazingly enough) and they came and fix the problem and everything was working hundreds after that.

But now my line looses sync randomly allbeit seldom but it is rather annoying when playing online. I have a 4mb line (http downloads only go +-250kb.s lately) and experience lag spikes that would lead to loosing sync. So I did some reading about SNR margins and Line attentuation etc etc. Upstream values are fine but is a SNR downstream value of 7.5db and a downstream line attentuation of 50.5db and a relative line capacity of 99% considered bad? If so, how bad and should I contact telkom to come out again or is there something I can do. I have already replaced the filters and tried a new router. same values every time..
 
but it used to work fine though for about 6 months or so :(

whats the difference between Near and Far data? Downstream attentuation is 20dbm on Far and 50.5 on Near (my readings)? Relative line occupation is 64% and 99& on mine?

I think I know what they did. They lowered the SNR target margin to achieve a successful sync without fixing the real issue. Thats why the line isn't syncing at full speed and why I'm getting those values. Am I correct?

Usually the connectors corrode and then your SNR margin gradually drops.
Another cause would be that more people subscribed to ADSL in your area which is causing interference.

With 50dB line attenuation, there are VERY few routers that can sync at 4Mbps without problems. I'd suggest that you drop your speed to 3Mbps if it is important for you to have a stable connection.
Dropping 1Mbps should increase your SNR margin by about 3dB.
 
SNR must be high, Attenuation must be low. The exact values depends on your local conditions. All near an far means is how the device at the other end of the link picked up your signal. Remember, ADSL is a freak of nature. Its a high freq signal imposed on a (relatively)low freq line so readings you get at your end is not neccesarilly valid for the entire line. Interference en-route can occur ( which is why you have the near and far readings....

in short - 50dB attenuation is a killer - and its seems its near ( your side )
Go yank all your plugs, give em a wipe and stick em back in...

Drop to 3Meg.
 
thanks for the explanation on everything guys :) I will ask telkom if its possible to drop my line a bit and see how it goes :) hopefully it sorts everything out

hey man where are you located? i also had a rock solid line that seems to just random lose sync/disconnect/lag spike all the time lately (past 3 days)
