SNR & Line Attenuation??

are you far away from the exchange

Can a router really impact on these numbers...? Thought it was inherent to the actual line.

Some routers handle poor lines better than others, my marconi and microcom got round about the same, a m8's d-link got about 2 higher then my billion was 5 higher. I havnt lost sync at all tonight.

ADSL Link -------------Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed -----384 kbps 128 kbps
Line Attenuation -------24 db 8 db
Noise Margin -----------31 db 22 db

Can a router really impact on these numbers...? Thought it was inherent to the actual line.

My numbers with three different routers:
Microcom(AD2636) 43db attenuation downstream
Belkin wireless G router 38db
Telkom ADSL 5100 router 25,5db

so if my router tells me this:

"ADSL Link Downstream --------Upstream
Connection Speed 640 kbps ----384 kbps
Line Attenuation 19.0 db--------10.0 db
Noise Margin 30.3 db-----------12.0 db "
YIIPPPPPEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!

telkom have upgrade me to 4mbps, within one day!!!
i think the telkom guys in my area(westville north durban)are quite jacked up....

whats amazing is my downstream SNR has dropped considerably wit the upgrade. how is this possible????????????

new router stats:

ADSL Link Downstream ------Upstream
Connection Speed 4096 kbps----384 kbps
Line Attenuation 19.0 db------ 10.0 db
Noise Margin 23.7 db--------12.0 db

Its drops by 6 SNR with every 512k upgraded from previous speed I think.

Pardon me then Kins, thanks for the info :)

My stats

Line Attenuation (The distance from the exchange)
26.0db

20dB and below is outstanding
20dB-30dB is excellent
30dB-40dB is very good
40dB-50dB is good
50dB-60dB is poor and may experience connectivity issues
60dB or above is bad and will experience connectivity issues

Noise Margin (Loss on Line)
22.6 db

6dB or below is bad and will experience no synch or intermittent synch problems
7dB-10dB is fair but does not leave much room for variances in conditions
11dB-20dB is good with little or no synch problems* (but see note below)
20dB-28dB is excellent
29dB or above is outstanding

I am rather happy :).
