Hi Guys

Im having some problems with gaming and viewing websites, when online gaming it takes ages to join a server and to change to the next maps.

I am guessing it has to do with my snr as you see below. Could i report this or is there no use in doing so seeing as my adsl is actualy working.

Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin : 8.0 7.0 db
Line Attenuation : 31.5 28.5 db
Data Rate : 4096 512 kbps

SNR has nothing to do with it. It will only cause your router to drop its connection and resync but it wont affect your speed unless of course you are syncing at a lower speed than usual because of it but otherwise your problem lies elsewhere.

I concur. Have you done a speed test? Try www.speedtest.net (and choose JHB or CPT depending on which is closer to you). For your 4Mbps line, you should get about 3400-3500Kbps speed.

You can also try testing with international mirrors if you like.

Do you play your games on a local server?

It is possible for low SNR to influence your speeds in a negative way. Low SNR means the noise is more compared to high SNR, therefore it's more likely to get errors on the line, resulting in CRC errors. Any packet with a CRC error needs to be retransmitted, and that delays it getting to you. A packet with a CRC error is basically wasted bandwidth, thereby lowering your overall speed.

Check if your router gives you an indication of the number of CRC errors detected. If it is fairly high, that could be the problem, otherwise it lies elsewhere.

Here is my line on a warm day (my lines better days) when my SNR sits at 20

And this is when my SNR sits at 4

I have been having some issues with my fax that runs on the same line with a filter on it. Theres no dial tone, so i replaced the filter and nothing. So theres no dial tone on the line but my internet connects and everything.

I play on local servers so there should not be any issues. Currently listening to that awesome telkom tune on the phone, will report the line and see what happens.

I also think having such a low snr is not good anyway so they should check it out.

Same thing happened to me two weeks ago - no dial tone, but DSL connection was working fine (although I think my noise margins were lower than normal - can't recall exactly). Reported the fault, someone came out 2 days later and fixed it.

It's a nice change from ISDN to not have the voice capability linked to the ability to connect to the net :D

So yesterday i was on hold for about an hour until someone aswered the phone at telkom and i reported the fault. The techie has already been to the house and it seems that the only problem was that some of the painters yanked some of the cables outside and had a loose connection. Will check if line is fine when i get home tonight.
