South Africa.
I have no idea how this will work, but perhaps someone out there will know. As consumers in South Africa, how do we actually go about getting the Government to chop Telkom into little bits and then sell off the pieces? How did the Americans do it to Bell all those years ago? Is it a matter for the High court? The Constitutional Court? How much will something like this cost? Can consumers sue the Government and Telkom? Is there anything that can be done?

Are we not THE PEOPLE???

Divide & Conquer

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Telecom

The best original example of a Telemonopoly was BT, British Telecom, Ofcom ( our equivelant joke being ICASA forced BT to be split into multiple companies...

Here is what we need:
Telkom Wholesale - responsible for end mile connections, forced to provide connections at cost to themselves & other telecommunication companies authorised by ICASA.

Telkom Retail - Responsible for calls/telephony services.

Telkom Internet - Responsible for Internet connections... with no biased favour towards itself.

SAIX/OpenReach for LLU ( Local Loop Unbundling ) and backhaul/backbone links.

AND THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT : GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO SELL UP THEIR SHARES, they have vested conflicts of interest.

Regarding the "baby Bells": You may want to read academic papers written by a guy called Horwitz and another guy William Melody (who subsequently visted SA as an academic and wrote quite a bit on Telkom), if you are that interested. I don't know much about how it was done.
