So I got 5G... and it doesn't work. At all.

I've been on the (frustratingly slow) 4G unlimited offering for 2 years now and decided to try 5G after getting several SMSes and emails (as well as myrain messages) telling me 5G was now in my area. I checked my coverage and it seems I am within coverage, though just before the edge the dark blue. I ordered 5G basic, the router and SIM arrived today.

I did the RICA thing with Ram couriers. I got an SMS and email a few hours later saying my SIM was activated.

The SIM that came in the router box says "RAIN 4G" on it. Suspicious. Has rain just not updated their labelling or did I get sent a 4G SIM?

I inserted the SIM. The router powers up, but only the wifi LED comes on. Both the 5G and 4G lights are off. I defaulted the router. It came with a different IP address than the default, and the default password did not work. Suspicious. The router still says "Registration failed" and "No service".

I tried the router outside, on both sides of my house, with a long extension. Same story.

In the meantime, rain automatically cancelled my 4G SIM. Now I have no internet. Very helpful. Maybe wait until you can see the subscriber is online on the new SIM before cancelling the old one?

I've opened a ticket - 12761915.

EDIT: I had the wrong SIM in. I'm an idiot.

Sounds like it simply hasn’t been activated yet.

Odd the sim came in the box, it’s usually pre-installed.

Sim saying 4G shouldn’t matter at all. A sim is a sim.

Perhaps. The SIM was inside the box separately, in the usual rain SIM packaging.

The router had an IP address of 192.168.9.1 (not the default 8.1) and the web UI was not accessible with the default "admin" password. The only option was to reset it.

RE the SIM, 4G/5G seems to matter.Screenshot_20220329-232613_1.jpg

I ordered my 5G Basic (R499) last week after being with Rain 4G unlimited since the launch. I got my 5G package after 3 days of ordering. My 5G sim (not 4G) came separate but in the same box as the 5G router and immediately after FICA registration with the delivery guy, I got an email notifying me "Your good to go! Your rain 5G order has been successfully delivered and RICAed, and your 5G SIM is now active". Once connected, my speedtest gives me around 380Mbps...and I can watch 4k content without any buffering!

To me, it looks like there is actually no coverage here, despite rain's claims. From the coverage map:

Whoopdee.

@rain_mobile @rain_networks, please help.

If there is no coverage, please reactivate my 4G SIM as soon as possible, or send me a new 4G SIM and collect your 5G router. And please deduct the days of no service from my bill.
Hey @jbroo
Our apologies for this.
We will give you a call to shortly to assist with this.
Thank you

2 sim cards? what sorcery is this?
They send a 4G promo card loaded with 1 gig prepaid, that you can use as a gift. The 5G one was lurking under some crap in the bottom of the box, and I didn't see it.

what sort of router they give you?
a Friend of mine got an oppo 5G router,
OP has a pic of the router, Huawei ;)

I found the web ui of the Huawei better, oppo was very basic

Edit: I see OP edited his post, maybe the pic wasnt there , appolgies @eg2505 if it wasnt :giggle:

Pic is still there. It's the Huawei H112-372.

I'm getting about 40-45mbps down. I'll monitor it over the next week. Keep in mind I signed up for 5G basic (which they say is up to 25mbps).

After the 1-2mbps of 4G, I'm over the moon with this speed. Don't need faster and don't care if it stays this way.
Hi Jbroo - you are on the edge of coverage so moving your router around your house will produce different results. When you have time you should try a few different places within the house and see if the speeds improve. Let us know how things turn out, we are always around to help!

Thanks @rain_mobile I may do that as a test but there is a specific place my router needs to live, cos it connects to a switch and UPS there and I have a bunch of other devices that feed off it. It does happen to be on the side of the house facing the direction of coverage though, so that works out well.
