So I joined the "dark" side :)

Made the jump, and got myself a MacBook Pro :) Loving the "learning" curve, but after using an iPhone and iPad 2 I keep wanting to reach out and swipe the screen :)
Congrats, welcome to the "dark" and shiny side ;)

Make sure they package contain all the accessories. Give them the call if you miss anything.
They sometimes forget to pack all them like the ones below:

Power Adapter:

Display cleaning cloth:

Cloak for cult meetings:

LOL. I heard they where doing away with the Display cleaning clothes though to cut back costs .

So far I am loving it, the main reason behind getting the MacBook was for photo editing (via Lightroom 4) and for that it is working a treat!

Enjoy.... The "learning" curve is very easy to master...
Instead of thinking what's the hardest way to do something, or what's the last place I would look for that thing... You just do it the easy way, the way that comes naturally, and doesn't require any thinking... and it just works ;)

MuHahaha guess all the linux crackers from the real dark side are gonna try n nail me now :p

Enjoy it, you made the right choice. I made the move when the first Intel models came out and have not looked back since. For those apps that still need Windows just use Parallels or Vmware.

and I went out and bought myself a MagicMouse today. As well as a dark hooded cloak :D

Should not have bought it, usually arrives in the mail after your first cult meeting invitation ;)

Correct, it comes at the same time as the email from MR SJOBS in Nigeria offering you USD50 million if you help him move Apple's money out of the UK bank account in which it has been trapped by ongoing litigation.

i also joined the dark side, mac air, magic mouse and those thule hard cases. really nice combo.

running vmware fusion for sql server and visual studio and it all works a treat.

really miss the delete, home and end keys though

You went over to the dark side ? Well when I moved over 4 years ago I saw the light....definitely no darkness :)
Welcome, and congratulations for seeing the light. You will not be disappointed

Which model did you get?

Some people don't like OS X but I'd go out on a limb and also say, "you won't regret it."

Just because I haven't. The MBP is most definitely the most beautiful notebook out there, at least.

(I havn't used Windows in years though)

Even though a new model is coming out soon (apparently) mark my words that you will enjoy os x. OS X shortcuts are the freakin' best.

I went Mac May last year with the release of the mid 2011 iMac. The 21.5" one - very happy with it. Cranked the internal memory up to 12GB :-). Unfortunately I had to run some Windows software, so invested in Parallels, but my requirement for the Windows software is starting to be something of the past. Hopefully I can soon be completely Windows-less at home!! :-)

At work I am unfortunately still forced to use Windows daily on a crappy HP laptop *SIGH*. Then I get text files I want to do some basic "grep" and "sed" on and a few other command line tools, then I REALLY feel like throwing the Windows laptop out the window ..... GGGGggggrrrrrrr!!!!!!

Used to run VMWare fusion, thankfully now I use Parallels (faster & better supported IMO); happened recently when it was cheaper to crossgrade to Parallels than to upgrade to the latest Fusion.

Btw if you have a full size Apple keyboard, you miss nothing;

does that full size keyboard come with the pro? If so I may need to upgrade to a pro.

the finder really frustrates me coming from a windows background though.

Are there any explorer like programs for OSX

Nope, full sized keyboard is only an option with the iMac... but you can purchase one separately.

Here's some alternatives to the finder. http://mac.appstorm.net/roundups/utilities-roundups/5-alternatives-to-the-os-x-finder/

What in particular frustrates you about the finder? maybe there's a feature you're not aware of.

I dunno. I am used to having the left pane with tree structure and right pane with content as such (like explorer).

Also where the f@&k is the cut option.

Also, what about mapped drives.

I am used to it now but I still find I was far more efficient with Windows Explorer...

Cut? Like Ctrl + X on win? On mac, just use cmd + x. Same as windows, just cmd instead of control.

I find the keyboard much easier than windows, eg: cmd + W beats ctrl + F4, and cmd + Q beats alt + F4, by a long stretch!

Also cmd+ space, cmd + , (comma), and cmd + ` are very useful

I'd suggest you look at this Apple video i.e. to make sure you are aware of the features of the finder, and where to find things. Btw don't also forget to go to the Finder preferences in the menu to ensure that all the items you want to be visible are available in the finder sidebar.
http://www.apple.com/findouthow/mac/#findersidebar

Also look at these videos for more advanced features / use cases:

Btw I'd recommend that you drag frequently accessed finder locations to the sidebar (secondary links) or finder menu bar (primary links) -- that way you only have the problem initially to locate frequently used local or network paths. Which will be available until you remove them (use cmd + click drag drop to get rid of them; same process as for the icons on your dock) i.e. it's a finder shortcut.

http://www.icreatemagazine.com/tips/mac-os-x-tutorial-use-practical-folder-shortcuts-in-the-finder/

Also to move a file, you like windows click on the file and drag, try dragging across to e.g. your primary hdd device icon in the sidebar, hover over the link without releasing the mouse button and wait... the finder will navigate automatically 1 level down, and this process can be repeated, until you arrive at the folder you wish to drop the file in. Default action is move. The alternative is of course learning to use the pathbar.

For some real powerful finder stuff I suggest you look in finder service or folder action customization using automator. Btw an OSX finder service is not the same as a Window's service; on OSX it an action that you want to perform on files or folders in the finder window, or a global action using e.g. a keyboard shortcut. What it can do is only limited by your imagination.

Good luck... let's us know if you have any more questions... welcome to OSX btw.
