LandyMan's 3G Journal

Hey guys,

Yep, I am sitting with a 3G rental on my desk, and I can't wait to try it out.

Seeing that IS is stuffed again today, now seems like the perfect time to have a bash at it! Thanks to all who suggested Cellucity ... what a pleasure to deal with those guys!

I'll let you know what my 3G experience is like!

My first speedtest

Ok, so it is up and running (quite easily). Getting 4/5 bars, and my first speedtest is not bad at all:

Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

* Download time: 12.688 seconds
* Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
* Estimated line speed: 321.6 (kilobits/second)
* Estimated line speed: 39.4 (kiloBytes/second)

Some things ...

Ok, so where I am, the 3G reception is quite good (East Rand atm). Will see what happens tonight at home.

I noticed that the external antenna's little connector is REALLY crap ... it keeps falling out. Is this the norm, or has this rental just been used too many times?

Also, I am trying to download the V5 dashboard, but Omnisol.co.za does not resolve. Anyone else having this problem?

Cheers

WOW!!!

I thought I was the only one. My connector is also falling out, but I had mine brand new from Vodacom. Whaddup?

LandyMan, I'm using an Option data card, and the external antenna fits snugly & never falls out, are you renting a Novatel data card? Another possibility is that you have been given the wrong antenna for the data card...?

Could you maybe tell me what speeds you getting with the FTP test?

ic, the card says option on the back (from what I can see, as there are rental stickers all over the show) but the booklet says Novatel ??? :confused:

I did see that the one little 'holder strip' (don't know what else to call it) seems to be missing ... maybe that's why it keeps coming out.

HA, sitting with the same problem as VMS .. almost no reception in Midstream Estate ... keeps hopping to GPRS, maybe 1/5 or 2/5 ... so I am actually quickly reading myADSL over, yes scary as hell, iBurst. :D

Ok, do you mean the "flanges" [think that's what they're called :D] - the ring connector with little bits cut out of it on the antenna itself? If so, then yes that's most likely why it is not staying in the data card...

Yes, those little things!
Surfing on GPRS now ... 2/5 not bad!
