Sure, technically 12x is more than 2x. BUT,

Drive speeds are somewhat misleading.
2x Blu-ray Drive (72Mbps(9MB/s))
Single Layer (2x CLV) - Constant Linear Velocity (Same speed across entire disk)
Double Layer - Couldn't find any data but no games have been released on a double layer yet.

Entire Blu-ray Disk is read at 9MB/s.

12x DVD-Rom Drive SL (9.25MB/S-15.85MB/s(AVG ~8x(10.57MB/s) DL (4.36MB/s-10.57MB/s(AVG ~6x(7.93MB/s)
SL(DVD-5) 12x Max (5-12x Full CAV) - Constant Angular Velocity (Speed Varies from edge to edge)
DL(DVD-9) 8x Max (3.3-8x Full CAV) - Constant Angular Velocity (Speed Varies from edge to edge)

SL DVD is 1.57MB/s > SL Blu-ray
DL DVD is 1.07MB/s < SL Blu-ray

Majority of 360 games are on DVD-9.

just the fact that ALL Xbox games don't require an install is testament that their drives are better than the PS3's ;)
 
aren't the few that don't require an install countable on one hand though?
 
the article is correct, I'm just amazed that someone would confuse 12x dvd with 12x BD or 12x cd or 12x floppy or 12x snail vs 12x hare.

each technology has a 1x read speed, and this isnt a constant across different formats.

you simply cannot compare a 12x cd with 12x dvd, this is truly a case of apples and pears. however, they are both shiny and round and 120mm in diameter. so we should stick to aesthetics.

I just noticed something.

Just out of interest, do you have any idea how drive seek speed works? If a piece of data exists on the exact same spot on a DVD as a BluRay disc, when the disc (as a worse case example) happens to be on the polar opposite side then the seek time is up to 6 times longer on a BluRay disc, it is an unfortunate case of physics.

The head of the reader remains at the exact same position regardless of the disc type (unless in your pears and apples universe the head magically moves to all positions at the same time, Hawkings may be fascinated by your time-space theory of BD discs). Unfortunately as such the seek speed for a specific sector (even though it is a far more populated sector) is a lot longer than for a BD than a DVD. Unless data is contiguous (as would be the case on a movie disc) the DVD is a lot quicker than a BD disc in terms of tracks and sectors.

Dude, stop worrying about this crap and enjoy your console. If you're having buyers remorse, then trade it in and move on, but we've been through all of this before a million times, these things have been out for 2-3 years already!

Rule 1 (and only): you buy on friends and content.

Moving right along ....

Agreed. At the moment games aren't cheap. Consider the future when you purchase.
