The only job for me is somethin in IT. its just deciding what to study. Social Science major in internet studies Degree at Univesity(UKZN) OR an IT DIPLOMA at Vc(unisa). Which one would be better considering i have my A+ and will be doing mcse. Even tho the degree option is not well mainly IT. Would my Salary be higher than if i had a diploma (thats it related) considering il have mcse and a +

yeah yeah yeah i know :) i started off with a 286 when i was 10. I can basically build a pc with my eyes closed. Im thinking more along the lines of network administrator. Im more hardware. Oh should mention i do xbox flashing and rrod repairs in durban as a side line thing to make some cash. Thanks for your replies guys.

I studied NDip and BTech in "Digital Technology" at Technikon Pretoria (now Twane University of Technology. The course, which is part of Electronic Engineering, is all about micro-processors and embedded programming (with a bit of C++ programming and IP networking). It may have changed a bit now, but this could be an interesting direction for you.

I believe that a formal education is essential to get your foot in the door at the larger companies. But ultimately you'll get paid on experience.

Now, I'm in telecommunications (about 10 years now).

Best bet is to get ur A+ and MCSE if u want an IT Job. It Jobs pay very well, with those 2 certificates u could earn up to R15 000 easily.

...that's only if you want to become a network admin or techie...

And seriously - earning "up to R15k"? You can do very little with R15k these days.

I did my degree and started focusing on some Microsoft certifications for now. After I'm done with my MCPD I'll move on to doing my Masters... Considering either going further in IT (M.IT) or doing an MBA. According to my dad (who works abroad in various countries), the people with IT degrees AND MBAs end up as CIOs of very big corporates... :D

come on guys degree or diploma ?

Degree.

My dad always told me that Degree people tend to be considered for Management more often than Diploma.

Besides, there are more people with Diplomas than degrees.

The benefits far outweigh the sacrifices of studying ;)

What do you mean "sacrifices"?! I love studying! I'd rather spend an hour each night bettering my knowledge or skills than waste the time in front of the TV... Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the odd recreational activity (like gaming) every now and then, but few things match the sense of satisfaction you get from knowing you've got another title to add to your business card! :D

For many folks it's a mission to open books and study.

I've reached the end of my tether when it comes to studies, but I'm pushing on. I hear you though. When you're in the groove it's lekker ;)

okay even tho the degree i will study (Bsoc Social Science Major in internet studies) it would be better with the added value of A+ and MCSE than doing an IT Diploma with A+ and MCSE.?

What do you specifically want to do in the "IT industry"? Do you want to become a network administrator or techie? Do you want to become a programmer / developer? If you answered yes to the former, then A+/MCSE would suffice. If you answered yes to the latter, then rather go with MCTS/MCSD/MCPD. Get the right certification for the right job. ;)

@maestro: I hear ya. When I finished my honours, I was dead tired of studying for 4 years full-time. I took a 3 year full-time break with the odd certification exam interspersed between. Now I decided to get into studying full-time again (well, as "full-time" as a permanently employed person can be :p). If I'm not studying for an exam, I'm reading up on tutorials in order to improve my knowledge and skills in my chosen profession. In the end it all adds up... the salary as well! :D
