That's where I lose the plot of this particular story. WTF would I want to spend any time tweaking my UI? A UI is just that - an interface. It's like the handles on my bicycle or the earphone jack on my ipod. It allows me access to something. It's not jewellery or a painting on my wall that I need or expect to look pretty.

If think if you find and answer to that you will have solved a big issue.
Why do we case mod, pimp our rides, wear designer clothing, pierce ourselves wherever we find flesh on our bodies, plaster posters all over our walls, etc.

For me personally, I like the "geek" factor and pride that comes with the territory, when people look at my desktop and go: "How did you do that?"

I must admit that I do not spend nearly as much time on these issues as I did 8 years ago, I found myself in the trench of "everything just works, so why bother", but since I started dabbing Openbox again an old flame was rekindled and I enjoy it again, reading up, learning, experimenting, getting it just the way I like it. Perfect, for me.

Granted, I do have much time to spend on this, but I enjoyed it again after all this time.

Well, these things are all for other people to see (except maybe the posters - how old are you again? ;)). No one sees my desktop. In fact, I'll probably get fired if I show it to anyone. And even if I took all the trouble in the world to make it look awesome, once I have my web browser and console open (the two major tools of my trade), I don't see any of it.

Revering to the time when we were all teenagers, if you pimp your car also you need to grow up, was just saying.

I get your point, on your work machine, I see no point in spending any amount of time to tweak that other than to make it more productive.

But you have to admit, it is neat having your own custom desktop at home? I hope that side of my former youth never leaves me.

Feel the same way. As a kid I would see peoples work PC's and wonder htf those people just live with the default background! Now my home pc has the default background :p My work PC has plain black as the background because I have 2 monitors and sometimes (fairly rarely) there's only a window open on the one so I'd prefer the other one just be black and not some picture. I also remember spending inordinate amounts of time with an explorer replacement called litestep. Made a lot of themes etc for that.

Other than changing the dock from 3D to the more space friendly 2D in OS X, and changing the desktop background to something darker, no, I haven't changed anything on mine.

He he, I don't think it's much to do with age. My mother's Windows XP is extensively modified. By her. :eek:

I just change the colours (usually go for something darker) and the desktop background, if only to get rid of whatever hideous default I was given.
 
I really would like to see the implementation of a new graphics engine, that can also cater for 3D in the future.
 
What do you mean, kingrob?

Some desktop/window managers already support 3D - Compiz Fusion is a notable example.
