I'm kinda sick of paying R554 for 4mbps and a 3GB cap.
Thats 12xR544=R6648/year. Still too much


It seems to me that all of them are in either March or August and since March is tomorrow, the next option seems to be August...

I DONT want to wait that long!
With Neotel launching soon, Vodacom's ADSL, when are the next price drops?

Can rpm or any other person with connection see into this?
I couldnt give about the upgraded upload speeds.....
 
When have we ever had a price reduction in March? It's always been August.
 
Am I getting it wrong or are people misunderstanding that Vodacom ADSL is simply an ISP service, not the actual DSL line. I don't know if there's much to get excited about if Vodacom doesn't have access to SAT3. Until Seacom arrives, there's not much they can do.

I'm waiting on Neotel. I've got a feeling their intro is gonna result in some decent savings and price cuts from Telkom, Vodacom and MTN.

I used to have a 4mbs line but i downgraded it to 384. Now I spend half the savings on bandwidth and pocket the rest. I don't see the point of a 4mbs line with a 3 gig cap.

I have to agree - a 3GB cap on a 4mbs line seems ludicrous. I guess you need a lot of self control, unless you can afford a bigger cap, of course.

The next price reduction must be the scrapping of the ADSL line rental fee. Hopeful thinking.
 
How do you people surf? The over riding situation in SA is cap. I have a Do3 account so I know that in a month I should condition myself for 3GB worth of international traffic (although I get more). The fact it comes down quicker to me doesn't change how much traffic I can use.

If the increased cost of 4Mbps makes no sense to you then that's cool as well. But the fact that I was able to get over 3GB of content since 18h00 today (29 Feb) when I found myself on a 41 IP range again makes that cost worth it again.

So don't knock that 4Mbps line so easily. I think the last 3 months prior to this one I did an average of 80GB+. This month somewhere close to 40GB. I doubt I would have got those numbers on a lesser speed.

I don't think you're quite getting the point of argument. We're certainly not knocking the 4mbps line. If you're getting 40 or 80GB on your line, thats great and more like it. We're saying that having the speed but being capped at 3GB is crazy. Thats why I said you'd need a lot of self control. I know if I had that kind of speed, I wouldn't be able to stop myself from wanting to download. I'd be capped after one day, so it makes no sense. Telkom really needs a major wakeup call.
 
They'll lower their prices too late.

They should have taken the initiative and lowered their prices long ago, but they did not. For that they shall suffer the indignation of losing a lot of their customers to Neotel/Vodacom.

it all depends what you do, lets say you want a ISO from the local ftp you can download it at 400kbps on local so thats nice :D :D:D
 
Ya, look the only way IP traffic prices will decrease is if there is an increase in capacity & competition. So until the alternate submarine cables start landing I dont think we'll see much change.

The line rental issue is a bit more complex. Most ppl here mistakenly assume the ADSL line rental charge is for the copper/local loop (for which they are being double billed as they already pay line rental for the phone service).This is probably due to the way Telkom chose to (incorrectly) describe this component.

In fact the ADSL line rental charge is for the infrastructure after the local loop that connects the DSLAMs to the IP backbone. This ADSL access network is currently built on a technology called ATM which is quite outdated and thus hellishly expensive. Telkom actually profess that the rental charge on a 384 line is under cost due to the amount of capex they keep having to throw at the access network to keep up with demand.

Now Telkom understand that the expansion of the ATM network is unsustainable so as part of the NGN upgrade one of their big projects is to convert the local exchanges to Metro Ethernet backhaul which replaces the expensive ATM. The cost to capacity ratio of MetroE is significantly better than ATM so until Telkom complete this project I dont expect too much movement (or elimination) on the 'ADSL Access' rental charge.

I would love to know when this is going to happen.

Seems August, but I'm hoping that it will happen before then.
I've finally convinced the management at my work to upgrade to a 4MB line and get a 10gig cap a month.

The cost is only actually an extra R100 odd a month, but the management were a pain to convince. They still thinking along the lines of when we had 40 computers and 200 pupils.

So I'm hoping that the price will come down quite soon so they can stop raising a fuss.
 
Telkom's to arrogant and stupid to lower prices until they absolutely have to because customers are jumping ship, and since they can't jump ship yet....

I agree with you there. There is no way on earth that they are going to significantly lower their prices until they absolutely have to. If I were them and making loads of cash I wouldn't. There needs to be lots of competition to lower prices...
 
Hi, I agree with this but many organizations never worry about price and many small firms even take loans to buy these equipments because a large number of financial institutes are offering loans at very lower rates.
Anyway, thanks for this info.
