That's a fallacy that many people perpetuate. While it is mostly the rear vehicle's fault, other factors are always taken into consideration including stupid stuff like if the front vehicle had a blow-out. I'd love to hear a modern take on this, to be honest.
 
Frenchies are decent value secondhand yes. But having had one has put me off of them for a while.. Maybe in ten years I'll give them another go.

Possible budget?

I don't see how the car in front having a blow-out changes anything if the car behind kept a safe following distance. One exception I can think of though would be on a multi-lane road where someone cuts in front of you and slams their brakes.

Honda Ballade, but thinking it was a little too "family" for me now. Mostly just me or 1 other passenger.

Guessing budget will be +- 150k maybe a bit more will know better once I sort out all the crap.

Willing to look second hand this time around.
 
Obviously there is a picture I'm not seeing.

I wouldn't touch a French or Italian car second hand unless it's really low mileage or a really spectacular deal offsetting future costs.
 
Family has 5 Renaults at the moment, never really had any issues... As long as the car is looked after, it will be good to you :). With your budget, take a look at a slightly used Megane 3 or Clio 4...

Pic of the mileage on the one Megane - most reliable car we've had, more so than Audi and Merc in our experience

I miss my Renaultsport Clio; had it for 3 yrs & *never* let me down. Fantastic car...Renault fan here

Got two '00 Megane I 1.6 (pic of odo is one of these), an '01 Scenic 1.6, an '07 Megane 1.9 DCI and a '10 Koleos 2.5 4x2 :)

They are great cars :p. You just need to find either a good stealership or a good mechanic

Get a good mechanic or do it yourself for the minor services :). Shop around for insurance, you will never know until you ask ;)

If buying from an Audi dealer the car will have a year maintenance plan included. Services shouldn't be too bad if nothing major goes wrong, all depends on what you want.

Insurance is very specific to the individual.. But shouldn't be too much.

Another option would be stretching the budget to get one of those new Polo's and adding in maintenance plan if you don't want to be bothered with service costs (standard service, optional maintenance). This could work well as I believe VW offer flat 500 bucks insurance on these cars so that could offset higher purchase costs.
 
Well with my ballade I got accused of getting a family car. With the Cr-Z I get something a lot less family like while still being Honda :)

I was also looking at the Ford Focus actually.

But the CR-Z looks so much sleeker.

My cousin has that ST ford. Too uncomfortable, those racing seats...

Ford or Honda - both acceptable. VAG - utter crap. But, if you can get your hands around a 91 Monza, then you're in the pound seats :D

But back to the topic at hand. From the Ford side I would rather grab the Fiesta than the Focus, seems better put together and is nicer inside to me, doesn't give the same "hey look at me my car feels fast" feeling. Plus you can get the Fez ST at the price of a Focus (which is also a granny car, unless you take the ST, which is a cake laaitjie car)

The CR-Z is a tiny, slow POS that looks cool. <- That coming from a Honda fanboy. Serious, hand on your man card if you're considering one of those.

If you keep it Honda look at something like a Civic Type R, won't be accused of family man in that. Otherwise plenty of nice options in that bracket second hand (the frenchies, Alfa, Audi A3 etc.), though since you're the type to have bought a Ballade in the first place I doubt many would appeal to you.

Also - Glad to hear that you walked away from the accident relatively unscathed.
