Sodastream hacks / replacement tanks.

Most of us homebrew beer guys just use co2 from a fire extinguisher it wont be hard to buy the atachments to refill the sodastream bottle from a 2 or 5 kg extinguisher or just modify it for use on the sodastream and they dont cost much to refill.

I'd be wary of these 3rd party hacks. You are ingesting this stuff after all...is the place doing fire extinguisher refills making sure no harmful residuals are getting into their product...nope...they're producing fire extinguishers after all & assuming nobody is stupid enough to inhale/ingest the stuff intended to put out fires.

co2 just needs to be 99.9% pure and then its the same stuff sodastream uses so i'm not worried about that. Will just use a certified gas place that is certified to do so. I most certainly won't be using a fire extinguisher though. I'll look at a big co2 tank like those used by divers.

That seems like a more sound approach to me...

Sure why not. Get it from a chemicals supplier and ask for a test to be done on purity as it will be used for human consumption. They can send it to a lab and you'll get a report.

What about paint ball tanks will they work ?

I'm looking at grabbing one of these to replace the need for expensive proprietary soda stream refills.

I would look to hook up a big tank and only have to refill it on a yearly basis.

Anyone done this, any thoughts?

Thanks,
Looks like a great idea - I'm just not sure I could bring myself to buy anything from that particular website.

Thanks,

I recently returned my Soda Stream cannister for a replacement at my local grocer - they didn't have my size but they had a bigger one that still fitted (physical dimensions) into my machine. It was 60l or something like that I think...

Wait for it....
R250!!!!

Fortunately the thread was too thick so didn't fit the machine after all and they refunded me in full. Absolute ripoff.
