Soft vs hard mousepads for gaming

Just buy a soft mousepad. The mouse just needs to glide.

There are hard pads which have good glide, but my problem with hard pads is that they aren't available in desk sizes, and most mice by design don't cope with the material. Laser sensors which aren't that common any more are also more appropriately used on hard pads.

I also did a write-up on this very topic, but mouse pads in general which included 5 reviews.

Then... I am not wanting to diss this article, but it needs a hand-on approach when writing these explanatory articles. I am not in the mood to point out the issues I have. All I can say is, get a desk pad, and the MP511 (XL) is more than appropriate as a starter and advanced pad.

I and others have also contributed a lot on this topic in the CSGO thread.

Sies. There are niche controllers like those.
Just the next logical step imho from a controller is to integrate the thumb stick and dpads on part keyboard part mouse. Currently the options isn't so great for a "gaming" one hand keyboard, as most are just sis membrane. I do have a mouse with like ±15 odd buttons on it, but it would be even greater if it just a thumb stick under my thumb and the same on part of the keyboard. haha.

Like those Fortnite mod kits?

My biggest gripe with the article is this,

Soft mousepads

  • Hard to clean
  • Less durable
  • Soft material may change surface level and friction over time

yes, it is less durable, but I have seen smokers with hard pads ;)

No, it is not hard to clean. You give it a cold bath with shampoo, scrubbing with your hand. Don't use a washing machine. Don't use a tumble dryer. Don't let it dry in the sun. Neither leave it where it is in direct heat.

To date I have only had one premium mouse pad which started to melt, because it wasn't washed in the right manner. My one Arena pad is now more than 5 years old, and it looks new. Note some hard pads also have rubber bottoms.

Material on the premium pads are durable, and premium is a loose word here, since the MP511 is less than R500 so is the Arena pads. All which are good.

Since mouse pads are now all mostly good, premium brands, they are trying to sell you RGB. No.

Come to hard pads,

  • Less comfortable for wrist due to hard surface

which is only really applicable to people with palm grips, and many pads can take some time to get used to when making contact with the pad. The MP511 which I named is like sandpaper, but you get used to it, and it isn't a hard pad.

I use something like this.
Obviously not the big name brand listed. Has the RGB lighting and all.
Farking best mousepad I ever had. Only cost 300 bucks

MP511 XL looks great. Out of stock everywhere it seems

Try Geewiz.

They have the MP510 in stock which is very abrasive, the 511 is the better choice IMHO.
Nice man!!
Looking for a replacement for my “world map” which is getting a little long in the tooth

Email Geewiz and ask whether the 510 they have in stock is actually the 511. I don't believe the 510 is made any more, and I have sent many people their way who have bought the 511. It is the best valued mouse pad on the market, that and the Cougar pads, but I will take the Cooler Master.

I reckon it is 511. Title says 510, but specification box lists 511 model number

I've been using the Corsair MM600 aluminium mousepad. It's the best hard pad I've used & still working perfectly after 10 years with no shiny/worn spots or either the speed or control sides.

I enjoy a very hard surface. I don't rage quit often but when I do I want to go with a bang, not a whimper.

That sounds amazing but cold? Does it have a material layer?
