Not sure if this has been asked before but im sure it has, either way I think a few people would be interested in this.

Is there a software AP out there? IE an application that allows you to use a regular Wireless NIC as an access point.

Something for windows would be nice.

don't know much about M$ , but on any standard linux distro, the HOSTAP drivers are capable, although this is dependant on your wireless card, it requires a wireless nic that supporst master mode, not many of them do, the chipsets I know for sure are prism, I think orinoco also supports this.

Yes, I have succesfully used HOSTAP before with a prism card, unfortunately this time I need it to run on a windows machine :(

The Windows drivers for the Gigabyte PCI cards and the USB adapters allow you to set them to operate as access points. There is also a piece of software called SoftAP ( which is no longer available it seems ).

There are Prism2 drivers for windows that also offer a HostAP mode, see www.ambicom.com

Although I really would suggest rather getting a real access point or running the linux hostap stuff. Windows as a switch/router just seems like an invitation for sadness.

I agree that dedicated boxes are the way to go, unfortunately its not an option for this particular application.

I use a Asus WL500g at home with great success and I have setup a few Linux boxes that do the job very well.

Thanks for the tips, will try some of these options
