Software causing packet losses?

Hi, I'm from Kiev, Ukraine, connected to the country's leading (or so they've stated) provider, Volia Broadband.

For the past few months I've been problems with packet losses while playing World of Warcraft (Europe). At first I thought it wasn't my problem, but when I called customer support, they (of course) told me otherwise. So I started checking all possible things on my side which could cause this.

I started with calling an electrician from my ISP to check my cable. It's a relatively new coaxial cable (but a special noise-resistant one as they say), and the electrician said everything was fine except for noise level. Two days later a couple of techs came and solved the noise problem saying that the level was now "perfect" and internet should be flying. Not so, unfortunately, as my problems persisted.

Soon enough I called my ISP again and support had to admit that my cable was working properly and that the problem had to lie elsewhere. They advised me to check my modem for defects, and my software installed on my computer which could cause losses of packets.

That day I took my modem to one of their service centers to have it checked. They said it was working fine. The only remaining option for the problem to be on my side is that its connected to one of my installed software. My Windows Broadband is turned off, and turning off my Panda Firewall didn't help - support still said they were seeing my modem or computer losing packets (but I'm not sure of the exact phrase they said - the point is that problem is behind my software).

If anyone is aware of what may be causing this, please reply. Thanks so much in advance.

Search for "TZ Connection Booster" on GOOGLE ( its freeware ) and put the settings to ADSL...hope this helps...

Robin Hood, thanks for the reply. I installed the program and set recommended values for Digital Subcriber Line (DSL), after which restarted the computer. Unfortunately, that didn't fix it...

Well....then there is only ONE option....1) Remove your ADSL-Router; 2) Take it to a friend who also has adsl and connect it onto his computer...This way you will know if the prob is at your Router, or your computer......then take it from there.
If it IS on the router, do a Hardware/Factory re-set and see what happens...ive seen routers giving hassles like this before...

Is router = modem? How do I do a Hardware/Factory reset and how can it affect my modem?

Alas, taking my modem to a friend's place is not an option.

If you have only ONE device attatched between your PC and Phone line, chances are it IS a Modem/Router ( you can search GOOGLE to explain in detail the diff between a Router and Modem ). Seeing youre not familiar with it, ill suggest first taking it to your friend...Then, only AFTER you have ruled out the problem ( ie modem/router OR PC ), only THEN take the Modem/Router ( if the fault lies here ) to your ISP or whoever did the setup on the router/modem and ask THEM to do the reset...After a reset, they will have to re-enter your dialup settings...Sorry, but this is the best advice i can give you as it can get quite complicated finding the prob if it goes beyond this :(

Here are a couple of things that can effect packet loss:
1) Faulty Router Setup/Corruption ( Do a reset );
2) Viruses ( Scan and remove );
3) Corrupted Winsock ( Repair with a winsock tool..search google for the tool )
4) Faulty TCP/IP Protocol;
5) IE Settings not correct ( Basic Sent and Receive );
6) Sharing of your router or sharing a CAP;
7) Faulty Telephone Line/Signal
8) Too many "hops" to the server or computer your connecting to.
