Guys am looking to gain some software development experience and so far the best option is to take part in some Open Source projects. Does anyone know of any good ones for inexperienced developers? The aim is to gain experience while studying.

First off, what are your interests? It will be much easier to contribute if you are interested in the project.

Would like to start off with some html, css, javascript - and maybe a few GUI app's in Delphi. Planning to do PHP and some .NET during the summer holidays, but I would like to master what i already know first.

Delphi is dying, rather focus on .NET

If you still studying then combine 2-3 of your friends and start website project which does something you fancy/your hobby.. combining hobby with work will teach you things quickly and will be more fun specially if you do in a group. Gotta enjoy learning process. nothing better then hands on experience

I'm also struggling to gain some experience. The thing is, I've looked at some projects and honestly, I really wouldn't know where to begin with them! I guess I'm in a bit of a difficult position where I know all the basics and fundamentals of programming and how you would approach certain things, but any software that might actually prove useful seems to be a bit above my experience. Any suggestions? Ideally the language would be C# as I'm quite confident with that...

Erm well I have one idea, sort of... LOL

Browse to http://www.cs.up.ac.za/showmodules.php?spc=cg it's the University of Pretoria CS website, then just download some of projects and practicals and try and do them, I can personally say that by just following the web-site you can pass the modules (IE. Do the practicals and study the chapters in the text book for a semester test).

You don't need to log in or anything to download the stuff, although if you do wish to do it you have to download the stuff now, they're removing it soon because the year starts over...

You can learn a fair bit by doing that :D

Usually a CS degree consists of COS110,COS151,COS140,COS214,COS222,COS214,COS226 and 6 COS modules on 3rd year level. At least that's the COS modules...

If you are planing to go into the software dev business then Delphi is not the way to go. It's cool, but not mainstream enough for dev work.

Check this link.

MS C# should be a fairly good choice.

As a project you could look at some of the basic AI stuff like genetic algorithm. Depends on your current skill level.

Yea please leave delphi alone cause then there is more job opertunities for me. I personaly dont think delphi is near its end. Have a look at all companies looking for delphi developers. Everybody now a day can do .Net, meaning not enough programmers for other languages.

Even more are looking for .NET developers, JAVA is also good choice though

Java would be a good choice. I've been working in Java development for 6 and a half years now, and there is such a shortage of Java skills at the moment, and getting worse. Too many projects out there, too few people with the required skills. I could pretty much walk into a job which requires Java. We are currently searching for experienced Java developers to join my team at work. We've been looking for a few months, and there is absolutely no one with experience, not in Durban anyway. Anyone who has some experience has been snatched up, and being paid a fortune.

Skills shortages are rife at the moment, what to do, what to do ....
