Software for PC / IT Business

I think any Accounting program would work quite well for an IT business - I can only vouch for CommitCRM but that is more for dispatching consultants and so forth than sales although sales can also be done through it. You can get a free 30 day trial too to give it a shot:

Gary somehow i knew someone was going to say that :)

In South Africa Pastel rules supreme! :D

He's right, despite the hair pulling setup issues, Pastel have the lions share of the market. They have it well covered and you can get support almost anywhere.

Yep, they are definitely not perfect, but have it pretty much sewn up. Except for much bigger businesses which use AccPac or FinConn.

And in our experience we actually had to hire additional staff just to handle the Pastel System.

Another good point. Automated accounting is not as automated as people think. Obvious though.

And another one on Pastel.

I use FOSS but for my wifes business books, its cheaper to go Pastel. You need to take the total cost of ownership into consideration: Accountants and SARS love Pastel.

I have recently been exposed to Palladium Accounting (http://www.palladiumsoftware.co.za/), perhaps it will fit your needs.

Most company's I have come across, do use Pastel. The advantage is that there is plenty of support out there.

Perhaps ask the question, what is your accountant using. In my experience, select whatever he/she is using, because in the long run it will save costs in terms of support etc.

Do you have any experience with vtiger?

I have set it all up for my business, but wondering whether it'll work out worthwhile in the long-run, or whether I should just use Pastel (for all the abovementioned reasons).

FOSS ftw :)

More options, thanks guys will look into it. Although it seems most are leaning towards Pastel.

If you go the Pastel route, take the addition annual Pastel Cover option. It is a few thousand extra, but worth it as it includes free support & product upgrades...

Talking about FOSS... I recall TurboCash going free with no support. I tried it once but couldn't get the hang of it... am I the only one?

TurboCash is great for small business... but I have found that you need an accountant or a book keeper who has already used it to explain to a new user how to use it.
Being free though it also has it's limitations.

I looked in TC (excellent product) but the reality is that it would have cost us more in the end as the accountants would have re-captured everything in Pastel.

Depends on your needs. Was cheaper to pay my wifes accountant to assist her with setup and capturing of data. If your a really small business then first outsource as much as possible to your accountant, but if your a company with dedicated staff then Pastel Cover really is worth it.

Looks like pastel have the accountants in there back pocket.
