Software kills soldiers

Hold on! This story has changed since the first few releases.

They said the cannon failed during the exercise, a technician fixed it and they then operated it again, only to have it fail again. Where does this vital 'fact' appear in the new story?

At the time, SA was still subject to an arms embargo and Oerlikon played no role in the upgrade.
Why is this then only happening now? (10 to 15 years later)
No members of the NP or previous government were behind the weapon at the time.
Still didn't stop the previous government being blamed for the "software" that wasn't correct...
Funny how peeps always seem to blame human stupidity on computers... Computers don't make mistakes - there's always a human involved somewhere...
The defence force is not the same one we had up until the late 80's. Training is largely a f-up now and troops have become slapgat due to the so-called "human rights" issues.
What happened to "A soldier is the property of the state"? No more pride - same as all other industries.

Why not? You think a software fault has to show up right away?

I didn't see the report where they blamed the previous government. Given the way military projects were typically run I'm surprised at how seldom military equipment goes wrong, worldwide. These days it is run like a business with limited budgets and deadlines.

Computer hardware almost never makes mistakes, although it does happen. It is understandable that end users think of it as the computer making a mistake when it is a software fault.

Maybe if the military around the world had not used this as an excuse to abuse soldiers, including experimenting on them, things may not have gone so far.

I have not seen this alleged lack of pride or dedication or training. Given the time and effort they put in they are entitled to be treated decently, not as some piece of worthless machinery to be misused and discarded when they become inconvenient. Maybe those who think it should be otherwise should be press ganged into service?

Could nobody upgrade in the past 10-15 years or so?

Read between the lines... btw there is no final "report" yet - this whole thread is just speculation.

Hardware doesn't make mistakes, it simply fails and has to be replaced.

This "excuse" was never meant to "abuse" soldiers - plainly put: Once in the military, you are military equipment, fully trained for a specific task and not subject to civil laws, regulations or rights. You are there to perform and not to be "slapgat".

Obviously one of those that's never been subject to proper (if any at all) military training...
"Pride and dedication" How can any SA soldier be proud or dedicated - just look at the state of disrepair of the military bases today compared to the time when there was still pride - no paintwork, gardens, clean facilities...
No wonder this country is going down the sewer like a discarded turd.

You've obviously never dealt with the military, or banks. Explain how you'd pursuade them to change their software, prior to this accident?

Nothing between the lines says blame is being laid on any former government.

Hardware doesn't make mistakes, it simply fails and has to be replaced.
Keep telling yourself that.

And perform they do, but sadly the military leadership seems unable to resist the temptation to abuse the power given to them. It happens over and over. Who wants to volunteer when the you can't trust the leaders not to kill you in some experiment?

I guess they have to do the best they can with what they're given as soldiers always do. It wouldn't be the first time a lack of funding has left soldiers with inadequate or even no equipment. Even the US can't seem to keep their soldiers suitably equipped.

The nutjobs that used to run this country poured money we didn't have into the military. And of course we have no information about how many "accidents" occurred under their leadership since they would obviously have taken steps to cover it up.

Wow, GoudgedEye that was a bit harsh. I'm not about to get into a debate with you about your opinion of me.

I stand by my statement. Regardless of warnings form our esteemed moderators. Allow me to remind you that these people are dead. For you to jump up and declare that the problem was that they were monkeys, with absolutely no knowledge of what occured is in poor taste. The strong implication of course being that this happened because they were black. My opinion of you remains unchanged.

I apologise if i have offended anyone. That was not my intention. I did not bring race into the subject, thats what has been read into my comment.
