What educational and fun software can I download onto an android tablet for a 12 year old boy? I have already downloaded some magazines on a pdf reader, a bit of music and some movies. Would anybody know how I could get hold of the software that has been rolled out to some schools in South Africa? Finally any suggestion on free games from the Google play store that can be played offline would also help. The child would not have access to data so any online sites, apps or games are a no go. Please feel free to reply with your suggestions.

You should post this thread in the Cellular Mobile section and ask the mods to make it a sticky as it can be useful to many parents.

Getting my kids tabs for Xmas, got tons of kids ebooks. You can get the school books in pdf format from the DoE website.

Checked out the Leapfrog leappad instead of android?

Not asking because i have experience just because i've seen it around and know of some parents that got it for their kids.

Zoodles is a good start for locking the things down reasonably well. It has a bunch of parent controls as well that can be useful.

Thank you for the suggestions also installing Wattpad app to get the child reading.

The kid is a bit tech savy so I think he has outgrown LeapPad.

I'm a big fan of their products and recommend to kids under 7. Their selling point is the durability of their products now. Kids 7+, its worth looking into alternatives as I've seen my son (8) has outgrown it while my daughter (5) still plays on it.

You can install products like K9 to act as a net-nanny on android devices. I use it on my sons WindowsXP laptop and it works great.

@Raphael123 look at Humble Bundle. I often buy their Android bundles as its DRM free. Not all the games are suitable for kids but over time you get to build a nice collection. Costs are cheap, often just $1 for a bundle.
