Finally getting round to this after various attempts, I was going with unRaid, but see its locked to a flash drive, and don't see myself wanting to spend R1500 if something goes wrong.

Does anyone have any experience with alternatives?
FreeNAX, FlexRAID, Snapraid, etc.?

My requirements are not optional:
1.) Redundancy
2.) Different size disks
3.) Extendibility.
4.) Read speed enough for HD content to at least two devices.

I am going to buy 3x 1TB drives to get started, and once up and running, start moving my content over from the current setup (all over the place) - and then adding the cleared disks.

I'm not too concerned about write speed.

Which board are you using and OS? Some Motherboard Manufacture have built in Raid. It is slower than hardware RAID.

No clue - a 6 year old one I have lying around which has 10 SATA ports.

Although, hardware raid won't meet the requirements.

Snapraid is starting to look like a viable option - I can use my existing set-up as is... just add one or two parity drives
