I am looking for a way to share files. I want have all my customer invoices and documents availiable online.

I would like to find software that allows me to manage this catering for
file or directory specific security ?
sharing on the internet
I don't want to be tied into a specific provider.
some sort of API to automate loading of documents
Tagging if possible

I was thinking of using an FTP server but it might get a bit complex

Any suggestions ?

I worry about using something like SugarCRM as a document archive ?
is this unfounded ?

You should be able to create local backups without an issue.
We use intoweb without any issues.

Google Docs

Google needs to do more marketing... You can share documents, collaborate, etc. Everything is auto saved every few seconds and the beauty of Google is - it's available from anywhere, backed up and accessible from the browser (no stupid software to install).

Give it a try before you making up your mind.

I keep all my documents in a Dropbox. Works great and available on phone or any pc connected to net.

Sent from my HTC Vision using MyBroadband Android App

I need a tutorial on this, we are google apps premium subscribers at work but cant think of a way to do this on Google docs?

Log into the Web interface for your Googleapps admin site,Make sure Documents is enabled ( Chat,Documents,Calendar I enable by default )
Log into the Webmail screen of an account, click on Documents at the top, upload file, click share, put in email address, give the address view/edit permission and send

If you're looking for a custom solution, hire a programmer, if not:

FTP will work - simply assign each customer a unique folder on your FTP server, with read-only access to other folders pertaining to their invoicing, etc. Controlling your invoicing will be an entirely different issue.

You could look at something like Joomla that has many addons to do this very thing. You'd still need to be able to lock-down your solution, which would require a fair amount of programming experience - or you could hire in the Joomla Marketplace and cut your learning curve.

I suggest a CMS, as mentioned before and then contracting a programmer to finish your solution off.

How do you address the fact that I dont want to be the owner for all documents ? is there away to have the domain own the docs ? or do you have to setup a seperate email account ?

Depending on the size of your business, Document/Records managent could make sense.

Something like Alfresco as an Open Source solution would be a good start(it has allot of features: DM,RM,CMS,BPM...).

Although its easy to use this is aimed at enterprise level so it wont really make sense for a very small business.
