Hello Mybroadband community

I am interested in pursuing a career in software testing. I would appreciate any tips or advice on how to land software testing roles. I am currently in my first year of Bsc computing and I did an online software testing boot camp on Udemy but I am looking to expand my skills and increase my chances of getting hired in this field.

Any insight or personal experience shared would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance

My neighbour across the road is a software tester, he went the route of getting a job in IT field, it was more a junior support type job and then slowly got promoted and once he knew a lot about software and worked with different problems and learnt a bit he got promoted into that line of work.

Learn Selenium (with Python or Java) and the various testing frameworks and see if it’s for you.
^^^^ this. Great advice. Learn test automation by taking any website and automating the navigation and inspecting the DOM

Thank you all for your valuable advice; it has been truly helpful. @CrypticZA Thanks for that experience, actually, I have arranged a meeting with the IT manager at my workplace to discuss my aspiration of transitioning into IT support. I am hopeful that this meeting will lead to a positive outcome. @Pho3nix , your suggestion to enroll in Selenium course is excellent, and I will follow that path as my next course on Udemy. @Brawler, I appreciate your input as well, I plan on doing one later this year once I have completed my exams.

No problem. With your head screwed on tight (and it sounds like it is) you will do well. Good luck.

Great advice, although I would say JavaScript Selenium is probably more important. Not every company uses Java or Python, but everyone with a frontend to test uses JavaScript.

Can highly recommend Playwright or Puppeteer as well. :)
We do all our user facing testing with Playwright and results are great.

I did my ISTQB certificate with iLAB Quality. Try them out.
I checked them, they are a bit pricey though.

Is the ISTQB certificate like drivers license, which you can obtain it via a driving school or by self practice

I am aware of the exam costs, however I was unsure if I could study independently in order to pass the test because, if I choose the iLab option, their training costs R6k excluding exam fee if you have no prior testing experience.
