What software is the best to create AVI's from DVD's

Don't flame me for a pirate copier now

I bought some old tv series from the SABC and they copied it on normal DVD-R (bad sound and pic quality i might add) and my problem is "CD-rot"(Does this exist??? )

So i want to store it on my hard drive.

mmmm......get divx if you don't have it already and the get dvdx2.3, they should do the trick, you might also need a decrypter
