I accidentally formatted the wrong hard drive last night:cry:. When I realized what I was doing I clicked cancel but it was not late. Now the drive is unusable until I format. Any Software I can try to my data back once I format the drive?

I used the open source TestDisk and PhotoRec http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec on a crashed hard drive and was able to get a lot of things back. I assume it got everything back because the friend whose harddrive it was didn't complain about any missing info.

I did notice that although it recovers all the files, the names and folder structure are not kept so its just multiple folders with random names filled with different files with random names.

But you can quickly see which is music and which is pictures and his mp3's still kept its ID3 tags so it was quickly imported and working in media player with track names, etc.

Hope you come right

It would take to long to clear all the data from a HDD so what happens most of the time when you delete something it just removes the headers/pointers or what ever they are called. So the data is still there it just doesn't get acknowledged.. Ive used Partition Guru before took about 2 days to get back a terabyte drive.. Only problem its not free.. :-/ Looked for ages for a free utility that was similar, didn't really find anything..

It worked fine for me after the MBR got screwed up. The drive appeared to be formatted as fat12 but it was really ntfs.
Folders and filenames were all OK afterward.

Thanks Guys! I will try out your suggestions tonight :)
