Hi!

Please help. Is there any software that can detect what is eating up my bandwidth.
Data is continously uploaded and downloaded when I'm connected even though I'm not using any.

I had this problem once before on my laptop - but I just formatted as I didnt have much stored there anyway.

Please help urgently as I cannot afford to lose data like this.

Hi abuusamah
The first thing that comes to mind is that XP is loading updates. Look for a little yellow shield in your task bar. If it’s there, then hover your cursor over it. It should say something like “30% Complete”.

If there is no yellow shield, then run your updated Anti-spyware. An industry standard is Spybot Search and Destroy
http://www.spybot.com/en/download/index.html and

AdawareSE from Lavasoft.

I'm sure other Forum members can add some usefull info.

Hope this helps

Marcellus

Thanks for the reply. Windows is not updating and I have an old version of adaware whic i updated and ran. it didnt sort the problem out.

i will have to download the later version and try again. maybe.

also i will try getting the latest AVG or some other antivirus program.

If all else fails, there is always format :o

Why not just install a firewall program and set rulesets for applications?
That way, if its not in the list, all outgoing connections from the "unknown" program is blocked as well?

 N7.1

Try using sytem monitor, use trace log and add the network interface object then select the appopriate counter to check your incoming/outgoing traffic. Might help, won't give you the exact culprit but it should help by pointing you in the right direction, use in conjuction with task manager and end processes one by one while monitoring system monitor to check effect on th network interface.

woh! i didnt quite get that!
please explain.

one by one, end one monitor bandwith, end another monitor again

OK. THANKS TO everybody for all the advices. i have acted on almost all of them.

i have used an updated AVG antivirus, Spybot, WinWash and a firewall - Bitdefender.

the problem seems to have sorted itself out now. :D

i think the firewall Bitdefender seems to be the right thing as it asks you to allow or deny each thing that wants to connect.
