Was pondering about this the other day.
Is it stock Windows XP or Linux with "special" software loaded onto for the interface?

I've seen then rebooted once, a while back, and it started up with Windows so think its a stock Windows [XP] setup.

Depends on bank to bank, some develop their own software and so the os can vary.

There is companies like Absolute System that manufacture and supply ATM's to banks

Its mainly windows because the ATM hardware is very specific and mainly supports windows drivers also there are way more people with windows skills so its cheaper to maintain.

At the moment:

FNB: Develop ATM software in house
ABSA: Using BITES to develop ATM software
Standard Bank: Using Diebold
Nedbank: Not sure but I think its Diebold

At the moment most banks are opting to have one provider to provide software and hardware (Both Diebold and BITES are hardware providers)

All I know is that the older ATM's are so damn slow it's scary!

It follows the pattern I've found that things that perform a multitude of tasks perform all the different things incredibly well while ANYTHING that only has to do one thing is incredibly dimwitted and slow.

Computers/Tablets/Phones = fast
Decoders/ATMs/Card Machines/Tills/TV's' etc etc = pulling hair out before it does anything

The Diebold software ive seen, years ago, ran Windows CE

Increasingly Windows XP Embedded. Service for that only ends in 2016, not in three months.

This is a non-issue. For years many ATMs in SA ran under OS/2, long after it, er, passed away. I know because I sold it to them.

There is this FNB ATM in the Irene Mall, Which you can use to EFT , Its makeing use of an OS looking very similair to Ubuntu.
Its slightly modified, If you close the browser it simply reopens it again, and all other menus are not available, ctrl+Shif+esc doesnt work :-) I tried Haha!

Its a bit worrying, what if the browser goes into a non responding state, and then comes alive after you left before the FNB session times out. :D
