From National Geographic:

The Sun has always been a source of warmth, comfort and light. But we're discovering a new and frightening side to our star. A kind of solar rage peaks every eleven years. And sometimes, Earth is in the line of fire. It's a billion pounds of matter traveling at a million miles an hour - a solar blast - which could send us scrambling. Without warning, navigation systems could be disrupted, blinding jets in the sky. Phone connections around the world could go dead, leaving us stranded during emergencies. And within minutes of impact, a power blackout could leave millions of people in the dark.

No need to worry about meteorites entering out atmosphere. Destruction seem to be just around the corner!

Hau eish....

Does the article say anything about heat? If this blast is so powerful, will there be an unbearable heatwave coming with it?

Well the last time it happened (accordig to what I read) was in the late 1800's so humanity was not dependant on electricity at all then. Now is a different story. Though asking around (on this forum actually), it can be avoided if the proper precautions are put into place.

Just for in case.

Its cyclic, like every eleven years. That is, it happened eleven years ago, not many people noticed. (Except scientists who care about such things)

This article is rediculously sensationalist. And the increase in heat output from the sun, is minor, as in, less than a 0.1% increase.

From what i understand solar flares have more to do with electromagnetic radiation than heat. Which is why communications will be effected.

I am sure we will be ok....

Think a meteorite making the whole planet go BOOM! is a bit of a larger worry :)
