Solar Panel price comparison (300W - 600W)​



below is a price comparison to help navigate the quagmire of different products available





Note:

  1. the list is sorted by PV-type, then by Wattage, and then by price
  2. the following general rule applies to the Performance and Price of different PV-types: Monocrystalline > Polycrystalline > Thin Film Technology
  3. this is by no means a comment on the merits / efficacy of any product - merely a price comparison of products currently available. Follow the solar discussion threads on mybroadband and the power forum to read which get good user reviews
  4. Delivery / shipping charges are not included and this can make a big difference on total cost as orders are usually for multiples of these heavy items
  5. some prices could be promotional prices / limited time offers

Takealot is selling a 5.5kW Axpert-type inverter today for R10 000

Not sure whether this one has the programs discussed above allowing you to:
1) draw your max requirement from your solar panels and only get any shortfall from the Eskom grid, therefore realising a large saving on your monthly Eskom/municipal consumption, or
2) choose to use it as a UPS during loadshedding, keeping as many of your devices running as possible with power from the solar panels & Lithium cells combined for the 2-4 hours that there is no grid power, or
3) while there is grid power to choose to re-charge your Lithium cells either from solar, or from grid, or both

All I know is that 5.5kW inverters are usually upto 3 times this price.

Any opinions / comments / alternative suggestions from the experts ?

Its a pretty good price for a 5.5kw inverter and 5.5kw mppt charger. The VM II has been around for a while so not as many features as the newer "hybrid" ones but if you can live with the limits it will be fine.
1) the specs say nothing but I believe I have seen VM II that can do that but you would have to confirm with the manufacturer as its different per manufacturer.
2)Its designed as a UPS so this is what it is meant to do. Just make sure if you go the lithium route that the battery has its own BMS as its not fully lithium ready.
3)you have a few options including "solar first" which will charge from solar before grid etc. It will also run totally off solar if there is enough to cover the draw if it cant blend solar/grid so you can still save power as it will switch back and forth between solar,battery,grid as needed it just can mix two sources at a time.
