solid state relays

Anyways 16amps should be enough to carry a 2KW element.....formula
P=VI X cos theta with Cos theta = 0.8 approx as it is a inductive load.
Therefor..... 2000=220 I 0.8
=11.36 Amps
3KW might be a weeeny bit to high. Using same formula as above = 17.05 Amps. You might however still get away with it for some time but your relay thingie might be the answer. Think you can also try Brights electrical if they still exist....Haven't been in cpt for a while.

well the geyser's circuit breaker is rated at 20amps so I don't want to go less than that. not sure what the elements kw's are.

brights don't have any solid state relays, in fact the guy had to phone head office to find out what a solid state relay is

wanted a ST relay cause they r smaller and fit in the DB better, but I see they only have dc inputs. will just use a normal 20 -25amp relay.

thanks

You might also consider a contactor from someone like Hager... Voltex are agents. They are din rail mounted and can fit into DB with an adapter plate. Assuming you would be happy with 2contacts it might just not be a bad idea and they are designed for more switching though. I personally would much rather look at something similar to this..... http://www.easyenergy.co.za/geyser-wise-max-solar-controller.html (See its R895 on that site)
Look around a bit. There are a couple of variants on the market. Don't know if you have an On-Tap there in cpt. Builders also used to keep one from Cobra I think
