im with telkom uncapped, and even though my router syncs at 3.6 / 3.9 meg, i seldom get around 2, which is causing much headaches( trying to break free from dstv, but this streaming quality is shocking)

router stats,

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3648 kbps 512 kbps
Line Attenuation 39.5 db 24.0 db
Noise Margin 6.2 db 12.0 db

who would be the better isp to try out? or is this a line issue more than an isp issue?

Hi, we do offer 7 day trial accounts.
If you are interested then you can PM me your preferred contact number and I will arrange for a consultant to contact you.

This would imply a line issue that will NOT be resolved by changing ISPs. Don't let anybody trick you into signing up...

Get Telkom to either sort out your line, recreate your port or provide you with a proper reason for your degraded service (eg. exchange congestion).

1 Call center agent says exchange congestion , another call center agent says bad line ,

Nobody can give me a straight answer

Those call centre agents no longer even work for Telkom and read off pieces of paper. Rather get hold of TelkomZA via PM or twitter and get them to investigate.

I have logged a call with the Twitter one, about a month ago, no answer :-/

Your line stats are pretty bad. I'd downgrade to 2Mbit and take it from there.

Your line stats are terrible.
That noise margin is your issue.

Are you far from the exchange?

I'd call Telkom and tell them you have noise on your voice line. Don't even mention adsl.

I can see from your line stats that it's your line. Changing ISPs won't help until you get your line sorted.

I think it's line, we snack bang in the middle of 2 exchanges , in a straight line, roughly 3 ks to each, as the cable runs, who knows

2 years ago, Telkom done me the favour of destroying my tarred drive way to lay fiber, and didn't even have the decency to to connect me to it

so this morning my line shows a bit different

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4051 kbps 511 kbps
Line Attenuation 41.5 db 25.0 db
Noise Margin 5.2 db 11.8 db

better? worse?

Worse.

Call Telkom and say you have noise on your line, then once they've fixed that see if 4 meg is stable. Otherwise downgrade to 2meg, a stable 2meg is better than a dodgy 4meg

Done that this morning, so will see,

Can't really go down, I've canned Dstv and doing the streaming thing, and 2 meg is just ***, like watching porn on a 14.4 k dial up modem

Noise margin, higher is better (min is 6). Attenuation, lower is better (max is 55)
