I was just thinking about a way to put ADSL in South African into context in terms of what a rip-off it is here. So, here's my hypothesis:
It would be cheaper to fly to the UK, live in London for a month, get broadband and download a few 100gb than it would be than the cost of the broadband alone here in South Africa.
Return flight to London: R8000
One month's rent: R5000
One month's food: R4000
Be Unlimited 24mbs broadband: R300
Total: R17300
This internet connection allows you to download 500gb per month, this bandwidth will cost you R35000 here in South Africa. Now, I think you have to sign up for a 12 month contract with this connection but even if you include all 12 month's it'll only be about R3600. And it'll still be like 15k less.
Anyway, this isn't to be taken seriously, the idea just came to me and I found it kinda interesting. But perhaps there is a situation where one would be better off flying off to live abroad for a month purely for broadband needs.
