I've seen the newpaper ads and read about the do "broadband" packages on do.co.za but I still have some questions that I'd rather get answers to from fellow forumites than Telscum  :

1) Does the R199 "all inclusive" level 1 deal really include the R155 monthly ADSL "line rental" charge?
2) When they say self-install, do they really mean you have to go and buy the POTS splitter and install it yourself?
3) When they say "free Wi-Fi modem", does it only apply to a 24 month contract like before?
4) Is the "do level 1" 1GB cap a softcap? i.e. Can you still access local sites after it kicks in?

Sorry if the answers seem obvious but I have to know for sure.

1) Nott 100% sure, I think its the ADSL Rental ie the Rental of the 384k, but then you still have to fort out R112 or what ever it is for the Line rental.

2) They just mean you fetch the modem and install it yourself.. Its quite simple.

3) No you do not have to take a contract and you still get a free modem if you do self install.. The reason is because telkom is already slow when install lines this way they attract people to do it themselfs.

4) As far as i understand Only the 2gig and 3gig Telkominternet accounts are softcapped.. Meaning you will get double your ussage.. 2gig account = 4gig bw.. 3gig account = 6.. Once you reach that 4 or 6gigs you are cut off from every site except the Telkom site, and the 4 banking sites. FNB ABSA etc.

I self installed and i never took the free modem. I was unaware of this, as I had already bought mine in December. Damn Telkom techie, i even gave him coke-cola

1.Yes it does, it's the line rental and TelkomInternet 1GB account included in the R199. What's NOT included (and that's the catch) is the analogue line rental of R111.
2. Yes
3. No, I have one free WiFi modem and it's not on a contract, it's month to month.
4. Nope, only the 1GB package is hardcapped at 1Gb, no idea why they'd make the lowest package hardcapped, it's pretty daft.

Hope this helps.

From what I understand if you already have a phone line that can support ADSL then you are already paying for the rental of the line, which means that the only extra cost for the 1GB account is the R279 or R199 from 1st August pending ICASA approval.

What I did not know is that you need to buy the POTS splitter if you self install, but I guess someone here will tell us where to get it from and the cost involved.

You need to buy the pots filter regardless of who does the installation but you can get them from any telkom shop. iirc they were less than r50 each. You need one for each phone/fax on the line.

Thanks @ Freaksta and feo

@ MrH
From what I can see, the microfilter is cheap, I can't see that the line splitter will cost very much either. Looks like you have to actually go into a Telkom shop to get this kit. (Cue scene from The Omen where they drag Damien into a church :p )

Installation looks pretty straightforward:

Another thing that occurred to me is that the new pricing only kicks in Aug 1, but the deal in the newpaper ad says the self-install option and free modem is only available until Aug 31. I don't think they thought this one out - it's going to cause a mad rush during Aug.

I'm sure they'll renew the special - they always seem to.

FYI, the WiFi modem already comes with 2 microfilters in the box. The splitter costs R12 at Game.
Wow - they have come down in price - then again it has been a while. The one I absolutely had to have sits collecting dust in the corner, unused. :)

Yup before going to get mine the guys here said it was more like R40 so I was quite surprised.

BUT the thing is that thread I created where the phone kept tripping the lights is STILL happening so I dunno, it's not the microfilters so maybe it's these cheapass splitters. Guess I gotta call an electrician or someone out to have a look. :(

I doubt that it is the "cheap" splitter since all it does is give you 2 connections into 1.
What extra could an expensive splitter have or do unless there is some sort of suppression filters built into it.

Anyway thanks for all the replies in both the "do" threads as I feel a lot more informed about how to go about this changeover to ADSL now.;)
