Hi all I'm a n00b when it comes to dsl, so I've got a couple of questions...

My roommate has been sharing a telkomsa dsl account for the last year (with a crappy telkom router). For the last 2 months it stopped connecting to the inet so I thought maybe the dsl router is fried. I borrowed a Linksys WAG200G from a friend of mine to test, now everything looks like it's in working order except I cannot connect to the dsl.

When I checked the log it tells me that Could not establish connection to channel as well as something with end port error.

So my question is:
1. Has telkom removed the sharing of 1 dsl account?
2. Is there a problem with the line?
3. Is there a problem with the router?
4. Is there a problem with the firmware of the router? (running v1.01.06)

Please help.

Do you have an ISP? You can't connect without an ISP username and password.

If you have that configured and it's still not connecting, phone your ISP and log the fault.

How can you live without internet for 2 months? :p

lol teraside... if you read the first line... it's my room-mate who's been sharing 1 ISP account from telkomSA - so 2 dsl line one in JHB and one in PE, 1 account @telkomsa.net or something - it use to work now I'm not sure if Telkom changed it.

as for me I'm still using I*** :(

"sharing"? with whom? How?
What logs? Router logs, PC logs?

sigh ok sharing as in the username/password, Log as in ROUTER log.

and BEFORE I you guys bombard me wit 20 questions NEED I mention that I'm a

Same here, my head is spinning..
Count me 3... as I said I don't know **** about dsl, the settings the connection, the ISP. hence the questions.

Let me put it this way all I know is DSL Router using some ISP (from telkom) there's a username and password. The DSL doesn't want to connect.

and that's ALL I understand about adsl.

I was told that she was using a shared telkomSA dsl username/password with her parents. Now she can't connect. I thought her Modem was fried so I borrowed a Linksys WAG200G dsl router from a friend and I tried to enter the exact setup that was on the Telkom Router to the Linksys but it doesn't connect as well!

I suggest you phone 0800 375 375, that's ADSL support.

Tell them which router you are using and they should be able to help you to set it up ;)

"My roommate's car does not start. I know nothing about cars. It makes a sound when the key is turned. I borrowed a friend's car and it works on the same driveway as her car, so it is not the driveway."

"What does the sound "sound" like?"

"I know nothing about cars - all I know is my friend's car works"

See why it is annoying to help someone who seems reluctant to try and work with us?

Great thanks a mill!

lets see car is defined by it's components insides, starter, radiator, engine etc...

how does that compare to a Telkom router being replaced with a Linksys router under the assumption that Lightning fried the Telkom one?

as for you asking me what

I amended my reply to answer what you asked.

So how am I being reluctant to respond to your queries?

Pleasure Next time we'll try and help you a bit more if the post makes sense from post 1 and if you are willing to fix the issue
I'm trying to understand what the issue is before attempting to fix it. Hence why I asked about Telkom DSL account sharing, router problem. I apologise that I didn't make it clear and amending posts results responses not seen.

Similar to what I used to do on dial up with an Mweb account. Her parents are in PE and she is in JHB but they share one Telkom account but log in with different routers (obviously). So Telkom might have targeted the shared account as being an illegal one and blocked it? Does the other router still log in or is it also borked?

The account is still in use by the parents.

so then it could be Telkom 'cutting' the second location thinking it's a hack or something. My ISP does that unless I inform them that it's me doing it. Apart from that maybe being the problem, I can't offer any other help as /me is also still very noobish :D

Is the line on DSL ?

It might be obvious to you, but make sure that your roommate's telephone line is actualy a DSL line. You can share the ISP account between 2 modems but then both telephone lines must be ADSL active (i.e you are paying the ADSL line rate)
