Hi guys/gals

Was hoping to get some info/help on adsl. I am in the market of gettin an adsl 384k line, and as the majority of forumites hav said, i will not be takin out a contract wit hellkom..

However, im a lil confused wit the basics wit regards to the setup, etc..

1. I hav read on other threads tat i shud opt for the self installation for my adsl line. How wud i go about doin this if my pc/ps3 is approx 10-15m away from the telephone connection?

2. Wat is a router as compared to a modem?

3. Should i choose the wifi or usb modem from telkom, or buy one on my own all together(any suggetions/pricing?)?

4. If i choose the wifi modem(router?), will my pc need a special connector to accommodate the wifi modem? If so, wat is the connecter so tat i can see if my pc has one?

5. Wit regards to the subscription to an isp, my general usage will be for emails and regular surfing. However, i do intend to use it for online gaming as wel to play pro evo/fifa. So im not too sure which route to take?

Any other info will be much appreciated

Thanks in advance guys/gals:)

Let me try and address your issues :P

1. You would simply use a normal phone cable to connect to your router to the wall socket - you can buy really long ones 10 meters etc , so thats not an issue, alternatively if you get a router with wifi and your pc has wifi you can just run a wirless network and not have to have the physical router close to either of those machines.

2. A router - is a modem that has the ability to network, e.g. has multiple ethernet ports for lan capable devices - this is the one you want as you have a pc and a ps3 , a modem is just that a dumb modem that dials up it wont share traffic between multiple machines as it only has 1 ethernet port.

3. Depends what model they offer you they offer a few - some are decent some are crap, let us know so we can tell you what to take... You want a router (router is both modem and routing device, modem is just a dumb modem that handles dialing up) not a modem.

4. All your pc will need if you wish to run it via ethernet is a network card and some ethernet cable which will be supplied with router. If you wish to connect wirelessly I suggest a good wireless network card such as the netgear wg311t. - Around R300 , your ps3 will have built in wifi so thats not an issue there.

5. Start off with a 1/2gb package - try webafrica/openweb/telkom all have pro's and con's - if you are going to play internationally then I suggest an unshaped acc - these go for R130 odd a gig , while normal shaped is R70 odd.

6. Meh I'm tired of typing if you require more help let me know.

You get a longer telephone cable to connect your router and then you place it next to your pc.

A wireless router is good, if you use the functionallity, you need a Wireless Network Card to use it, it's got an antenna on it.

A usb modem is not as nice as having a router and routers are priced from R500 and up, depends what you need and want, a router has a built in hardware firewall, so it increases your security, a router is always connected, with a modem you have to dial a connection or set a program to dial for you.

Look at either WebAfrica or Axxess for prepaid bandwidth and get a normal Telkom 2Gigabyte or 3Gigabyte account, look at www.do.co.za they have certain specials, but it's on contract if I'm not mistaken.

DO Broadband is not on a contract basis only and it also supplise 10gb local for each gb of international purchased e.g. 3gb/30gb.

Thanks for the replys :)

This might sound like a noob question (which it is:D), but do i need to hav a wireless card on my pc to connect the wifi router, or can i jus connect the router directly to my pc without the use of a wireless card?

If you dont wish for your desktop or laptop to use wireless yes you can connect it via ethernet cable - but my understanding was the word WIFI - meaning you wish to do this wireless and have the router away from the pcs.

If you want you can have router connected to desktop via ethernet then just enable wifi on router and have the laptop connect wirelessly etc.

Please for the love of god just secure the router I dont want to see another thread on bandwidth theft :P

Thanks. The only reason i mentioned wifi was that telkom offer a free wifi modem if you sign a contract with them. So i wasnt too sure whether i needed to have a seperate wifi card on my pc, or whether i could just connect it directly to my pc without the wifi card:confused:

For the love of god boet DO NOT SIGN A BLOODY CONTRACT - they will bleed you dry and offer pathetic service - contract is not worth it for that ****e router - go get a netgear or linksys seperately then - DO NOT SIGN A CONTRACT WITH THE DEVIL - the SNO (neotel) is due mid this year, you dont want to be in an expensive Telkom contract when cheaper options come along.

ok ok point noted;) no contract then..now i jus need to get my parents to understand those sentiments as well..hehe

k, im gona look into buying my router seperately then. Any suggestions as to make, model number, price etc. tat i should look for?

I use Netgear DG834GUK, have sold around 50 with no problem at all. Includes wireless, firewall, dynamic dns, etc
