Hi,

A friend of mine is wanting to get ADSL. Now Telkom has tried to convince her to go with the 2 year contract, which I don't think is a good idea.

Could someone suggest a good ISP and ADSL option to go with. Basically she just surfs the internet, chats and sends email, so she doesn't need any fancy account.

What does she need to order from Telkom and the ISP, if someone could provide a couple of steps.

Any advice would be apprecaited.

Thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum,

If your friend already has a telephone line, then she'll have to:

1. Apply for ADSL - The HomeDSL192 option should be fine for her since you say she only uses it for surfing, e-mail and chatting. It's the slowest ADSL option available, but even then it's around 5x faster than regular dialup.

2. After the line is installed she should buy a modem. She could buy the modem beforehand, but if for some reason they can't complete the installation she will have wasted her money. She could also buy a modem from Telkom, but this isn't recommended as their modems suck and are expensive.

3. Join an ISP. The cheapest account for the best value is currently Web Africa's 30GB package for R199. It's only a promotion though and will be more expensive after October. Since she probably won't use much bandwidth and would maybe find it a hassle to go to a different ISP in the future, she could go with Axxess's 3GB account, also for R199. They too provide excellent service.

All she orders from Telkom is the HomeDSL192 package, or if she doesn't have a telephone line she'll have to get one first.

From the 1st of August she can expect to pay R270 (ADSL line rental) + R87 (anologue line rental) + R199 (ADSL account) = R556 p/m for the connection. If she already has a telephone line then you can subtract the R87 because she pays that already.

Hope that helps!

go with dsl 192 (20kB/s download) @ R270 on a axxess 10 GB account @ R249.
Dont forget that you still have to pay R87/month for phone line rental and the first month you will pay double dsl line rental.

EDIT: oh ja you still have to pay the installation fee, i think it is 404

the best thing i think is to look at www.hellkom.co.za at the isp listings. from experience DO NOT sign up with MWEB or TelkomISP as they are total rip-offs. rather give the business to one of the other isp's that make an effort to look out for consumer interests. all the recent ones who have lowered their prices are worth a look. personally i signed up with hyperlink since i appreciate the initiative they took to lower prices 1st and start the whole competition thing. also worth noting are the isp prices on the hellkom site is yet to be updated for some isp's, so its best to click on the link and visit their sites.

also the homedsl 192 should be adequate for the type of thing she uses the internet for. i agree don't sign up for 2 years with telkom because that would be allowing them to dictate prices and theres nothing u can do to stop it. rather buy a modem for around R500 - in any case any modem is generally better than the way overpriced telkom modem. when competition finally arises for telkom at least she will have the option of changing over should the price be good.

R270p/m for 192 adsl + R199 for a reasonably sized isp account = approx R470 p/m.
