Hi guys.

I'm currently looking to get ADSL but I have a few questions and your help would be appreciated...

Is it possible to do a self install and then perhaps choose an ISP such as cybersmart with its one price adsl offer at R259 (3GB - 384/128).

In effect would my total monthly Telkom bill be R259 + R111 ~ R370 per month (obviously excluding calls).

Whats concerns me a little is the self-install bit.

Reading this bit from the Telkom website:

...Thereafter order your DSL service from the nearest direct shop or via 10219, wait a few days for Telkom to contact you to inform you to proceed with SIO thereafter you can collect your FREE modem from any direct shop or have it Home/Office delivered

Order an ADSL Internet account from your Internet service provider of choice, connect the micro-filter to the phone line, connect the side named Line into the wall side, not modem side, connect the modem power and the network cable into your PC, switch on and run the start up software from the disc provided with the modem. You will be required to verify your DSL connection which will activate the billing after 7 days of installation.

My understanding is that by choosing the self-install option Telkom will automatically start billing me monthly for the ADSL access charge?? Am I correct in my understanding?

Is there any way around this since the ADSL access charge is already built into cybersmart's offer?

Correct if you order the selfinstall Telkom will bill you for the line.
If you order a a inclusive package from a ISP offering it tell them you will do a self install and they should not charge you a setup fee either.

Hi.

Correct, if you request Telkom to install your line you will get charged the Installation fee. If you request an ISP to do this for you (If they offer all on in packages) you will not have a setup fee, but in the same light you can request Telkom for a self-install and sign up with whoever you want. A warning though if you take an all in one package from an ISP, the ISP will own ADSL line, you will not be able to move away from that ISP as you will loose your ADSL line as Telkom does not allow transferring of ADSL lines as of yet.

Really? Wow thats really stupid.

Would those conditions apply to a doBroadband package as well?

Yes doBroadband makes your line part of TelkomInternet, and not Telkom direct. We use the voice part of the line alot, so Closer works better than doBroadband.

So, assuming that I go with a doBroadband package would I ever be able to change to Neotel or another ISP at a later stage??

Well i dont see Neotel working with a Telkom line... so you would cancel your line anways.

Another ISP, yes, you can just purchase a single account from them, and use it on the same line.

You cant however cancel your TelkomInternet doBroadband account you get from them.

Holy Cr@p. There goes my opportunity of having some sort of ADSL connectivity for under ~ R400 p.m.

Will this rule ever be changed, because it just seems silly to be honest?

hmmm... I guess that it would probably still be best to get them separately..

ADSL rental : R152
Analog rental : R111
OpenWeb/WebAfrica Account: R209/R199 ~ R470 in total

Is the cost of data also going down in August?
