My first question is this:
1.)Windows updates are cached locally by all the ISP's this I confirmed with at least three including SAIX. Why then does this count towards my CAP when it was in fact downloaded locally? Only about 4mb of the traffic going to Microsofts Windows Updates Sites actually gets there as the rest is on SA Cache/proxy servers. I feel personally that stopping people from getting to the Windows Update site is not in Telkoms or anyones best interests as I was not even able to download the patch for the Blaster virus. Getting this virus would not have been beneficial to myself or anyone else in SA especially Telkom. I had to download this patch using my ISDN setup, which took forever as my whole network had to be reconfigured again to support my dial-up firewall rather than the ADSL router. I am switching off my ISDN services and do not even own a 56k modem. How in the future if I'm capped do I update my anti-virus and Windows to prevent Viri etc using me to get through SA? This costs everyone money especially Telkom which equates to everyone get higher accounts etc. As I stated previously most of this is cached locally but unattainable due to the cap. Is it not possible to leave certain areas open even when under the cap (yes it is because Telkom's ADSL hardware does support this) like Norton, Trend and Microsofts Windows Update sites so that even ADSL users can remain protected and free from viri and not have hundreds of capped ADSL users with a possible 256k DOS capability on SA's infrastructure? Yes think about it 256k per ADSL user in SA how many diginet lines can be hit by one ADSL user as most Diginets in SA are 64k or 128k.

2.)I purchased another ac**** at a different ISP yet my ADSL usage stats grow daily on the Telkom stats and e-mail they send to me and yet I'm no longer logged into ADSL using my Telkom account. Yes I know that the other ISP is still Telkom underneath but its still different accounts and I'm not using the Telkom one at all?

3.)Being capped meant that we would be placed on a slower cicuit. Slow=non-existant?? I cannot open a single page Internationally or even get MSN to function while under the Telkom cap. I don't mind waiting or it taking long but no matter what time of the night or day I cannot get either http/ftp or MSN to work except for local stuff and most of the local stuff does'nt work either because web designers use overseas ad's etc in their pages and that stops the page loading while my non-existant International bandwidth kicks in to download it (Beware of using International things web devs as yes a lot of people no longer even load your pages due to this.)

4.)Also being a gamer and using SGS services (a really good thing done by SAIX to keep Internatioanl traffic to all minimum by hosting game servers in SA) I found that logging into Raven Shield while still having available cap was impossible (the game logs into an International site UBI.COM to authenticate on ports 6667, 7777, 7776 etc. which is probably why one the chap posting about his studies above cannot get in either) but since using another ISP this is now again possible and immediate. Do ISP's have control over the ADSL setup they sell their customers with regards to ports etc? as this could decide who the most popular ISP is. I have used Stormnet for many years and again their ADSL service (my second account) is proving to be better than the Telkom one in this regard.

5.)I have foned and queried a number of other things using Telkoms numbers they provide for their services. Infuriated and un-impressed are not the words that spring to mind but lets continue in that vein. It appears I'm not the only one that gets promised they will find out the necessary info etc and get a return call and then wait for nothing as the call never happens. Even E-mails they say will be replied to (and they give me personal e-mail addresses of people that can help etc.) don't get responded to. Can something be done in this regard? Theres nothing more infuriating than the crappy music and voice messages we have to listen to for hours before getting hold of a person who then sort of listens to you and says you're in the wrong department and then proceeds to just forward you somewhere else where they laugh at you immediately because now you are definiately in the wrong department. I will offer my tel number if necessary as proof of this as the calls are recorded and traceable. Three days, 9 promises of getting back to me regarding the second Telkom ISP account and I still got nowhere other than one of them sending me an application for a NEW ADSL service. I got hold of one lady who really did her best to help me and kept me on the fone for almost 2 hours while she herself foned and got bumped around Telkom trying, yes, just to get me a second Telkom account as advertised in the ADSL usage e-mails I subscribed to.

I have no gripes about the cap except the above mentioned points and the ADSL service itself, my gripes are more centred towards Telkoms Customer Service as its almost non existant (Sorry to those who do do their jobs at Telkom well, we do appreciate it but you are the minority) and queries are wasted as well as future business for Telkom. All a new Telco has to do is provide a nice Customer Service centre where things are done correctly and proffesionally and they will soon be the biggest in SA. I also charge exorbitant rates to my customers and they are happy to pay because yes even if I can't answer them immediately I don't go eish and pass them onto someone else who has less of a clue then I do. I research and get back to them even if I cannot help them at all and THATS what business is about and some compromise as well.

Now I don't know too much about Proxys, but isn't part of the job of a proxy to cache stuff, so when subsequent users request a web page, they get it from the cache rather than the actual source?
And if this is so, shoudln't this patch have been in the cache? I'm sure lots of people would've requested that patch in the last few weeks - I know I've downloaded it. And yet you weren't able to get it at all because of the cap. So this would mean it was trying to get it directly from Microsoft?
But then what is that cache actually there for, if it isn't really caching? Or does it only cache web pages?

The cap is on total traffic in and out of your modem/router. Not on international bandwidth only.

I would also like to know why my daily report shows an increase even though I switch back to MWEB (for reasons of my own - other than hoping to get better service)
