City of gold...
I'm in the market for a new laptop, not very urgent at the moment but I would like to assume at christmas /new year many stores will have some pretty good specials. I currently have a budget of around R8000 but it may be able to go To R10 000 at a push.
Laptop will supplement my current desktop, But it needs to handle games, not at full blown graphics but decent enough for entertainment on the move. It also needs a long enough battrey life. Atleast more than 3hrs.
Been looking at the following laptops:

Dell Inspiron 1545 T6600 NB R7999.95 @IC
SONY VAIO VGP-NW23 R7999.99 @ Dion
Compaq Presario CQ71-210ei R7999.95 @ IC
Acer 5542G-524G32MN R7999.95 @ IC
Fujitsu Amilo Pi3560 R7999.95 @ makro *****specs are best
ASUS K61IC-JX017V R8580.00 @ digital addiction
GIGABYTE 734UZA-M R7352.00 @ digital addiction price/specs are best
GIGABYTE Q1580V-934MZA R8599.00 @ digital addiction also excellent specs
HP Pavilion dv6-1225ei R7499.00 @ HP shop

SONY VAIO VGP-NW23 would be my personal opinion. I can't seem to find any related reviews on this particular model number maybe its old stock?
If your on the move the Acer 5542G-524G32MN R7999.95 would be a great choice. I know their warranties are great because they support international repairs.

These are the ones I would choose.

I have been very happy with my Dell and the after-sales has been excellent. Phone in the fault, do some troubleshooting, next morning I have a techie with parts standing in my office. My latitude came with a dedicated 256MB nvida GFX, and while not mind blowing I have managed to play a few FPS.

Thanks guys much apprecited advice..... Just a quick question which processors are better the inte T processors, the P processors or the SU processors. Also are the AMD processors any good?

It depends on what you want. If you want more battery life - choose the SU - I gather or the LV or ULV variants. If you want performance you go for T or P.

Whatever you end up buying, make sure that if it comes with Vista pre-installed, that the shop you're buying from issue you a free Windows 7 upgrade equivalent.

I'll go with the Dell, Sony or HP. That was some of my choices a few weeks back as well. The Dell has excellent build quality and the HP is a great entertainment laptop. I ended up with a Sony, which had both qualities. If you have a look at the HP there is a DV7 series out already, seen them at IC. Not sure how true this is, feel free to correct me but i read in a review that the T series processors uses more power and generates more heat than the P series?

Many people swear by Dell's support and services, however many people swear at that of HP's.

dell with the service plan for 3 years is a winner... my m1330 is 3years old and the ram and processor upgrades I have done it will last me another 2

Well seems my laptop purchase is on hold... I just got scammed for a significant portion of my budget.. ..... Unless, I get lucky with some gifts this festive season...... I might manage a purchase in JAN..... :(
Well on the Upside It does give me more time to look for the "perfect" laptop! :o

Get yourself the Studio 1555. Got one atm and it's awesome... LED screen, P8600 @ 2.4Ghz, 4GB Ram, 500GB HDD and it's blazing fast for a lappy

Hi zakdoc. Yes haven't seen them advertised anywhere in SA like that. I got mine with Vodacom. And all VC's studio 1555 deals have the above mentioned specs. Unless you buy from dell directly, then you can do the same configuration. Really powerful!

I just got the Acer Aspire 5740G, Brilliant specs.
core i3 processor, 500GB hard drive, 4Gb RAM, Ati 5470 GFX card
I took in ancient PC, and got R1500 off it Ended up paying only R7500 for it, I think it was worth the wait.

One thing tho, battery life isn't all too great 3.5 hours max, but I'm looking for a high capacity battery to compliment it while I'm travelling.
