"South Africa Sets Earth's Hottest October Temperature on Record"
That's because accurate measurements aren't done in ALL the places that get really hot.
There's no instrument in the middle of Namibia, or the Australian outback for that matter.

I should still be hotter than the desert.

It has to do with warm gusts of winds that brought in hotter than normal air.

I don't know what max temperatures are and if these winds occur there. It's possible, just like you said, maybe just never been measured.

Meanwhile, out here in the NAMIB desert, we have been smothered in a wet , grey blanket of mist for most of the day, with the temp hovering around a meagre 20.....

This happens along this thin stretch of the Atlantic because of the very hot temps in the binneland mixing with the moisture from the cold ocean....

Strange , but true.... whilst the rest of the subcontinent swelters during this time of the year..., we tend to sit in the cold mist.....

Yikes, it must be cold in the evenings. I remember Walvis Bay was damn cold in the night.

For the last week, the mist comes in so heavy in the nights, that the next morning, the roads in my town have these huge puddles of water..... not rain, just heavy mist.....

the nights are rather damp, but humid...... nigh time temp at this time of the year seldom drops below 16/17 .......

Only get's cold if the wind starts to blow at night....

Yeah good place to shoot. I think the Namib is probably the oldest desert in the world and the most arid in Africa.

The Namib is the oldest desert in the world..... but not the driest......

In Africa I think it is. Well it seemed to me there was nothing but sand when I was there :p I still enjoyed my time there, trying to climb up the highest sand dunes ...
