Hiya, I have a few questions about setting up the D-Link DSL2640U for my needs. Here's the scenario - there are two desktops connected via cable to the router; the laptop and PS3 connect wirelessly.

I'm on the Telkom Do3 package and currently I've set up one WAN connection (or type PPPoE) and plugged my Do3 account details into it.

I want to purchase a local-only account as well - is this the correct approach to get it working?
1. Remove the PPPoE account on a router and create a WAN account of type "Bridging".
2. On the PC in "Network Connections" use the wizard to create a connection to the Internet using the Telkom Do3 account details.
3. On the PC in "Network Connections" use the wizard to create a connection to the Internet using the local-only account details.
4. Connect on the account that is to be used at the time.

I have two desktops connected to the router so I assume this process will have to be repeated on each, and the laptop? The Telkom ADSL allows for 4 concurrent connections so I should be alright.

Is there an easier way to get this done, for example keep the PPPoE WAN connection so that one desktop, laptop, and PS3 connect to the internet using that, and only configure one desktop to be able to choose either the Telkom or local-only account to connect to?

Any advice and comments would be most appreciated.

The way you described you won't be able to use the Internet from all the devices at the same time, since there's a limited amount of PPPoE connections that you can dial to the same account as far as I know (need some confirmation on this though).

I'm not exactly sure what you're trying to achieve here though? I guess you would like to have all the local traffic to go through your local-only account and the international traffic to go through your Telkom Do3 account? If this is the case, it will be worth while having a look at the RouteSentry: Manage 2 ADSL account connections on 1 pc, 1 line, 1 modem (local/intnl) topic.

A friend of mine has exactly the same router and we setup the router in half-bridge mode (bridge mode + pppoe to Telkom account). That setup allowed his parents to browse the internet using his international (Telkom) account and then when he wants to play games/download locally, he use RouteSentry to dial the local account via PPPoE connection.
We have now replaced the previous configuration by adding a Linksys WRT54GL router to his existing D-Link DSL-2640U (in bridge mode) to replace RouteSentry, such that anyone that connects to the Linksys router's traffic will be automatically diverted to the correct account. The scripts & information on how to configure the Linksys WRT54G series router can be found here: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=81315

Thanks for the info Pada.

In most cases, the two desktops and the PS3 will be online. Is this what one would call concurrent connections?

A friend of mine has exactly the same router and we setup the router in half-bridge mode (bridge mode + pppoe to Telkom account). That setup allowed his parents to browse the internet using his international (Telkom) account and then when he wants to play games/download locally, he use RouteSentry to dial the local account via PPPoE connection.

So in the WAN section of the D-link router, you'd create two WAN connections - one bridging and one for the Do3?

And when you install RouteSentry, would you need to create two accounts on your PC - one international, one local - which you then need to specify in the RouteSentry settings?

I'm really not sure how many concurrent PPPoE connections you can dial. I also assume that the PS3 is only using International traffic & can't connect through a VPN or Proxy server? If thats the case, then like you said, you have to create 2 WAN connects. 1 Bridge & 1 PPPoE to your Telkom (International) account.
With this setup any PC that is connected to the router should be able to make use of the Telkom account.

Then on your desktop/laptop, create a PPPoE connection (remember to untick the TCP/IPv6 protocol & untick the "Use default gateway on remote network" under the TCP/IPv4 advanced properties) to your local-only account. Then use RouteSentry and select your Ethernet/Wireless adapter for the International and your local-only PPPoE connection for Local. Check the RouteSentry log to ensure that the routing table was correctly setup (it shouldn't show errors).

Once that's done, you will need to either run a VPN or Proxy server such that the other 2 PC's can also split their traffic over the 2 local/int. accounts via the PC that is running RouteSentry. This is only necessary if the ISP only allows one PPPoE connection. It might be that they allow up to 4 concurrent PPPoE connections, and then you can just repeat the same RouteSentry setup on the other 2 PC's by only creating a local-only PPPoE connection...
