My email

Hello.

I am feeling very frustrated by Telkoms shocking ADSL support, I do a lot of online gaming and the international speeds are totally unusable. I pulled my old 33.6 modem out of the cupboard and got better response times.

I would like to use an international carrier other than Telkom. As mentioned, I use my account for online gaming which means I dont need a lot of bandwidth, but latency (ping times) is important to me. Thus if I could get a small pipe (16/32/64K) that has decent (sub 500ms) pings, I would be very pleased.

Would it be possible for your company to set up a proxy/router or something along these lines? I have lightning fast ping times to local servers, so the round trip to your server would probably be sub 50ms. Perhaps you could split a Diginet line into 16K segments, thus reducing the charges for all concerned. I know there are a lot of frustrated gamers out there like myself, would it help if a certain number of us made a commitment to go with such a service if you provided it?

Response from East Coast Access:

Sorry for the dealy in replying.

We can supply smaller connections, but latency would still be a problem (600ms). At 64k we can guarantee 8k and that would cost R1500 per month.

You MUST factor in you losses on the ADSL network. I am not convinced that Telkom have resolved all their issues yet.

And another from Imaginet

At present, for gamers the best and most affordable option we can offer them with regards to cost vs performance ratio is 64k ISDN. So to answer your question, for a gamer there is no solution at present that gives you good pings whilst still being connected 24/7 as is the case with ADSL.

Although we do offer 33.6 Analogue leased lines for an extremely affordable price of R395.00 excl VAT which is connected 24/7, this service is onlyavailable to the East London, Grahamstown, Port Alfred Areas, and would not be appropriate for gamers performance standards.

Should you have any further queries please feel free to contact us.

Kind Regards
