Johannesburg - Management of the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) on Thursday shut down several campuses amid violent student protests.

TUT spokesperson Willa de Ruyter said students from Soshanguve, Ga-Rankuwa and Pretoria West campuses should not return to studies until further notice.

"Students staying in university residences should vacate by 07:00 on Friday," she said.

The violent protests began on Monday and management obtained a court order on Thursday preventing the protests from continuing.

The campuses have reportedly been closed as management said it feared for the safety of the staff and students and wanted to prevent further damage of the university property.

Management has for the last few days been engaged in talks with the student representatives, and a memorandum of understanding was signed by the two sides on Tuesday.

"Despite those honest and sustained efforts, students have resorted to class boycotts, intimidation and barricading entrances to the three campuses, successfully disrupting university business."

Earlier on Thursday, management sent a message to students advising them to return to classes but many did not comply. Professor Nthabiseng Ogude, Vice-Chancellor and Principal, has criticised the actions of the protesting students.

"Students and external people, some of whom were intoxicated, stoned buildings and threw petrol-bombs, causing extensive damage to property."

The students were protesting against the allocation of the National Students Financial Aid Scheme and the condition of their residences.

Conditions are bad, thus burn **** down. Logic. Where is it?
 
Happens every year at TUT... albeit seemingly more violent this time.
I feel sorry for anyone who wastes their time and money trying to get some kind of qualification through this institution.
WTF happened there? Used to be a respected technikon

Haha, my friend just skyped me saying he doesn't have to go to work... he's a lecturer at TUT :D
 
Can't even give the idiots education and they figure out a way to screw it up
 
The problems are always the same:
1) Didn't pay so can't write exam
2) Didn't learn, so do not have enough marks to write exam
3) Canteen prices went up by 5c
4) Accommodation, although they get place to sleep, study and eat.

Demands are always accompanied by some form of violence. We will see the same thing next year this time.

Speak for yourself. As a human, I find this generalization deplorable. There are civilized humans who choose not to go around burning things. We look upon you with disdain and wish that all those who partake or accept such behavior disappear from this planet.

What has happened here is the typical uncivilized actions of uneducatable and pathetic people. People who will wind up poor and blaming society for their problems. The same people who will get sympathy from the usual suspects giving them resources to procreate and spread this vile behavior.

Until this behavior is punished in the harshest way, it will just get worse until the pangas come out and the slaughter begins. I think we need to introduce public corporal punishment like in Singapore. Give them all 6 of the best and humiliate them at the same time. Then make them pay for damages.

If that doesn't work, nuke them from orbit, it's the only way to be sure.

Wow. OK you condemn violence in your first paragraph then you encourage it in your last? Don't you think that's hypocritical?

South Africa used to have corporal punishment, during the Apartheid era, yeah that worked well for us. No social upheaval whatsoever.
 
It happens twice a year, the first time is when they have to pay fees and the second time is when they get their results back. Good educated student's won't strike, because they are busy studying.

I think the social upheavel was for other reasons.

Thanks to Kader Asmal's f'up. TUT was a merger between Pretoria Technikon (used to be one of the best technikons), Technikon Northern Gauteng (TNG) and Technikon North West (TNW). TNG is known to have all these strikes every year. And most of the faculties have been relocate to TNG (Soshanguve) campus.
I went to Tech PTA from 2000 - 2003 and it was still good then.
 
Stale food, theft prompts TUT protest

Pretoria - Police units were deployed to the Tshwane University of Technology on Tuesday, as protesting students burnt tyres and destroyed some infrastructure belonging to the institution of higher learning.

Vice-chancellor and principal Professor Lourens van Staden said not much damage was done during the “very peaceful” protest.

“In the beginning of the year we had the same thing, very peaceful, no destruction of property and no violence. A few tyres here and there is what you will [get],” Van Staden said as he addressed reporters at the Pretoria West campus.

“Even according to the police giving us reports, it has been a few tyres burning and it has been peaceful. I am not saying I condone it but that is how we do things in the country.”

There had been damage to the students’ residences at the university but Van Staden said the financial cost had not been calculated. He said some doors had been broken, using fire extinguishers.

In those years the youth did not do so much crime and were not so disrespectful towards other people, the law and property. So yeah bringing back corporal punishment would go a long way to restore this country in a few generations. Until then we are farked!
