Johannesburg - Recent power cuts have led to 90% of South Africans to cut down on electricity usage, said global marketing company, Synovate, on Tuesday.

"According to our survey this was mostly done by Cape Town residents, where 95% indicated they were cutting down on electricity usage."

Respondents said steps they took to cut down on electricity usage included lowering the temperature of their geysers, covering geysers with insulation blankets and even sharing baths, said the company.

The company said 48% of people in Durban switched off their lights to save electricity.

"Less people leave work or school looking forward to home-cooked dinners as 12% of respondents are using their stoves less often."

According to the survey a further 45% of the population switched off their geysers when not in use, with 50% of Johannesburg respondents electing to utilise this energy saving technique.

Electric and electronic appliances were also used less frequently with 19% electing to switch these off when not in use, Synovate said.

"This makes an enormous impact given the amount of energy wasted when devices such as this are left on standby. "

To cope with the inconvenience of load shedding, more than half of respondents prepared their meals at different times of the day.

"To combat the effects of broken traffic lights and congestion, over a third claim to leave for work earlier, with 50% of Johannesburg respondents following this trend compared to 28% of Durbanites and 22% of Capetonians."

But I thought Eskom said that we had failed to decrease usage by the required 10%?

Does the article state by how much usage has decreased? As far as I can tell it only says 90% of people have decreased their consumption. No info on how much we've actually managed to save.

Because, while say 10% of people might be able to save a lot of power, because they run swimming pool pump 24/7, etc. The majority already had been saving already, and can only do small things like turning down the heat on the geyser, etc. So on average, Eskom won't see a 10% saving ever from the public. And since the public only used 20% of all the power, I really can't see how a 2% saving is going to help them get back into the game. I think this whole save 10% thing, is just a tactic to keep people diverted from the fact that Eskom is giving us one over.

Ja, I did wonder that. Saying you have reduced usage and measuring the actual figures are two different things. Nevertheless, I still think Eskom has used the opportunity to shift the blame to the consumers for not "saving" electricity when they are to blame for not providing it.

If they had properly anticipated demand we would all right now be blissfully unaware of any crisis and still paying some of the cheapest rates in the world.

If I have to equate the Water Pricing Structure here in the Cape which has gone up in price about 500% since the year 2000, to Electricity, the same scenario will pan out if Eskom gets it way with it's 50% increase, where people are definitely using less water, mainly as a result of the hefty pricing structure.

Such a pity about the Eskom Scenario. Had they started building more Power Stations 10 years ago, or even 5 years ago, think what the savings would have been in the price of building these new Power Stations. Now the whole thing is going to cost an arm and a leg with the costs rising rapidly, probably increased with the fact that Eskom is now desperate and that goes with a cost tag from Developers ready to cash in.
