I'm about to go shopping, so good time to start. Got given a 40D, and have a 450D, so now I plan on selling them both, and buying the next best thing :p

...or maybe just sell the 450D, and get a nice tele-lens :)

Huh? Someone gave you a 40D?

Geez, you lucky fish. Sell the 450D and get good glass. The 40D is an awesome camera. EF 24-105L f/4 USM IS fits it very nicely :)

I am thinking of getting the 450D special at Incredible. Why dont you guys like it?

I have my CANON 75-300 lens from my old non-dSLR EOS300. Been told it will work. Opinions please.

Yeh - the 40D actually seems better than the 50D, according the reviews out there.

That's what I'm hearing too. I have tried the 50D, I like the higher available ISOs. Other than that and resolution, they're incredibly similar.

Editorial note: bwana, maybe split some of this off into a thread called "Someone gave xrapidx a 40D!"

:)

I think DPReview concluded that while the 50D was overall better it wasnt that much better - to me that says not worth the 40D to 50D upgrade but if you're just entering that class then worth considering.

Will split now.

That's my feeling too. I guess most reviews that rate the 50D lower than the 40D put too much emphasis on the price - the 40D have come down nicely, while the 50D is still selling at near-introductory rates. It'll get cheaper.

Will split now.

Cool - I'm all for derailing threads and rat-holes, but some threads are better left on-topic ;)

The main reason I'm thinking of selling both is to go with a Nikon D90 - the 450D was a real let down, haven't had much time with the 40D though.

DISCLAIMER: It might just be me with the 450D though, noob to SLR :p

How was it a let down?

Focusing in low light mainly (like a darkish room), and once it did focus, if the subject moved backwards or forwards slighlty, blury photo.

Example (and the room had reasonable light/target was lying still/focus point was set to center, which was the arm/photo cropped for example/18-55mm IS Kit lens):

Let me know if its something you think I did :)

Get a better lens.

I see the photo was shot at 1/25th - blur was probably caused by motion.

EDIT: At f/5 the DOF could have played a part too. What were you focusing on?

That's amusing. I thought the xxxD bodies had an AF assist lamp? The 40D doesn't, but it's low light focus ability is excellent, nevertheless. It's default behaviour is to (if the pop-up flash is raised) fire off a flash to focus with, but I've disabled it. I was at a xmas party last night, only the light source was a few candles scattered about. I had my camera set to 1600 ISO and in AV mode, with the 35mm f/2 lens. 80% of the pictures I took without flash were in focus, and those that weren't generally were because one of the AF points locked onto something in the foreground (when the camera was passed around - for myself I had only the centre point enabled).

I keep reading about how bad the 40D's AF is, but I test the limits often, and I cannot say I've had any problems, even with my f/4 lens in near darkness. All 9 AF points are cross type, and the center point has a diagonal (I think) line on top of the horizontal and vertical if you have an f/2.8 or faster lens on. This is one of the things I don't like about the 5D - it's AF is a much older generation - only one cross type as far as I know.

On the arm, camera was in P mode.

What should the settings have been for this photo? I'll try find a similiar example of one in daylight.
